I am a founding mother of La Leche League France and have been involved in breastfeeding since 1973. I breastfed my babies exclusively for around 6 months until 1984 when my 3rd child self weaned. I then worked at Pithiviers state hospital with Michel Odent for 4 years. At that time I decided to become a midwife. During the course of my midwifery education, I was alarmed at the midwifery protocoles used to teach mothers how to breastfeed. For example, I never once held my baby in a cross cradle position. I never once waited for mouth gape. None of my babies attached correctly although they had massive weight gain during the first months. Thankfully, the laws for successful BF were unknown when I had my babies. I was concerned, therefore, in the 1990s: many published breastfeeding experts had never, ever breastfed. Nevertheless, they established the rules published in 1991 as the BFI 10 steps leading to successful breastfeeding. I created instinctual breastfeeding or biological nurturing (BN) laid-back BF in response to their one-size fits all protocoles. Today, laid-back BF is well-known but the mother's position in only one of 6 BN components. BN webinars, classes and certification courses are well-known today organised by The Nurturing Project (JoJo Colson).
