I fell into healthcare. That is what I tell people when they ask how I started down this path. I graduated with a B.A. in History but truly had no idea as to what I should do with my life. I accepted a temporary, seasonal position with a not-for-profit in their emergency assistance program for residents in need – rent, utilities, food, and referrals for further assistance. When I was offered a permanent position by this organization, which operated a skilled nursing facility, two assisted living facilities, a home health agency, and outpatient rehabilitation, I accepted and remained for 21 years. Why? Healthcare allowed me to realize and produce work that supported my values. Helping clients and their loved ones navigate a system that can be scary and confusing. Working collaboratively with my coworkers. Leading stakeholders to integrate the myriad of regulatory changes throughout the years. Performing my work ethically and with compassion. Each step of the way I took every opportunity to learn. I learned that I love the components of process improvement – Plan Do Study Act – and the data collection and analysis that is part of the process. I learned that I excel at training others in these processes, as well as compliance and software implementation. My healthcare career journey shifted to a different health system and home health administration. Leadership and operations became the focus, but I continued to enjoy quality assurance and performance improvement work, as well as billing and clinical compliance. Home health administration is not for the faint of heart; embracing the changes is key to success. Being a life-long learner, I obtained my Master of Health Administration to further hone my leadership skills during this time. I am currently working on my Lean Six Sigma Green Belt education and certification.It is again time to welcome the next opportunity.
