I am Associate Professor in the Sutherland School of Law at University College Dublin.One of my primary research interests is in International Human Rights Law and in 2017, I was awarded a Higher Doctorate of Laws (LLD) by the National University of Ireland for my published work in the field. This includes my book on The UN Human Rights Treaty System: Law and Procedure (Bloomsbury, 2012) which was shortlisted for the Irish Association of Law Teachers, Kevin Boyle prize for outstanding legal scholarship; my edited collection, International Human Rights Law: Perspectives from Ireland (Bloomsbury, 2015); and a range of articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, including the Human Rights Law Review, the International and Comparative Law Quarterly and the Human Rights Quarterly.Another primary research interest of mine is Human Rights Education. I have recently completed a second doctorate at the School of Education, Queen’s University of Belfast for my thesis on Law as Powerful Knowledge in Human Rights Education. I am an editor of the open-access (gold-model) journal Human Rights Education Review which was awarded the first Amnesty International USA Human Rights in Higher Education Award in 2021 in recognition of its special contribution to future research, teaching, learning and collaboration in human rights education across the globe. I am also Short Articles Editor of the Irish Jurist.I currently sit on the Royal Irish Academy’s Standing Committee for International Affairs and am an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bristol’s Human Rights Implementation Centre. I served for two terms as Commissioner on what is now the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.I have taught a number of modules at UCD over the years including International Human Rights Law, European Human Rights Law, Constitutional Rights, Law and Courts and two pioneering clinical human rights modules involving students teaching in secondary and primary schools, Human Rights Education (the first human rights clinical module to be taught in the school) and Law in the Classroom.
