About Suzanne Ehlers

Curiosity, agility and strategic optimism-- traits I bring to the transformation, scaling and growth of mission-driven enterprises I've led. Investing in people is what gets people to invest in your mission. The work of this virtuous cycle is never done and I'm always refining my practice of humility, of inclusive leadership and of equity.I consider myself a servant leader: My primary job is to be in service to employee excellence, the workplace experience and our stakeholders. I am energized by a challenge and have an ability to inspire teams and organizations. I truly love the art and science of leading.A systems thinker with a background in grantmaking, I bring a global perspective to policy issues and connect the dots between ideas and resources to surface opportunities others may not see. I’m a big proponent of convening sometimes-unlikely partners from across sectors to find new solutions to old problems. Optimism doesn’t always come easily, but I believe it’s essential to leading people to create the world we all want. When my own optimism flags, I build it back up by learning about successful, on-the-ground efforts to create change around the world, spending time with my family, and baking — a grounding practice of precision and love.

  • Malala Fund
    Ceo
    Malala Fund Feb 2020 - Jan 2023
    Us
As Malala Fund's CEO, I worked in partnership with Co-Founders Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai and the board, leadership council, staff, education champions and girl fellows to create a more equal world by making sure all girls can go to school. We built networks of education advocates. We held leaders accountable. And we developed the next generation of young leaders. As the chief executive, I led a truly global team of 80+, helped mobilize and manage a budget of $20+ million and reinvest significant and multi-year resources in the 10+ national contexts where we work for change. Implementing against a 5-year strategic plan (2020-2025), we also led a Covid Response Framework; transformed to be an anti-racist, de-colonial and feminist organisation; and built further and deeper excellence at our boards of directors. Areas of exploration included girls' education and climate change, digital technology, and crisis and resilience.
  • Pai
    President & Ceo
    Pai May 2010 - Feb 2020
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
As PAI's CEO, I led the effort to build the case for women's health and rights as an integral development issue that impacts everything from the environment, to state stability, to food security. PAI leads U.S. and global advocacy for international family planning, and provides key technical and financial resources to partners in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America.- Accelerated the organization’s transformation, bringing it back from the brink of failure, both financial and programmatic, and revitalizing its board, programs, and funding. Increased PAI’s net assets from $2.9M (2010) to $27.9M (2019). by restoring private foundation confidence in PAI's ability to deliver on mission and formally initiating an individual donor program.- Transformed formerly under-engaged Board of Directors into motivated ambassadors, advocates, and askers on behalf of PAI and the mission.- Support all/lead most fundraising efforts. Tripled volume of funds that are distributed in small grants to organizations in low- and middle-income countries, from <$1M to $3.9M in 2019, to strengthen country leaders’ ability to advance hyper-local solutions with greater impact and legitimacy for long-term sustainability. - Expanded work from <10 countries to 30+ countries with 60+ organizations worldwide, working across policy channels to advance the mission and demonstrating the needs of local/indigenous communities to funders.- Put PAI at key leadership tables (e.g., USGLC, Green Group CEOs, Family Planning 2020) by modeling continual, intentional, cross-sectoral leadership.- Strengthened the PAI team’s impact by leading professional development and organizational excellence work in values identification and activation, as well as continual and persistent work on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Pai
    Interim President And Ceo
    Pai Oct 2009 - May 2010
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
After a global search, I was chosen to lead the organization out of crisis following its leadership turnover during a recession.
  • Pai
    Vice President, International Advocacy
    Pai Jan 2008 - Sep 2009
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
I directed major international campaigns and grantmaking fund. Represented PAI at global meetings. Developed organizational positions with regards to policy developments.- Helped secure and then manage a ~$2M grant to integrate family planning and reproductive health into proposals from countries seeking support from the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB, and Malaria.
  • Pai
    International Advocacy Associate
    Pai Nov 2003 - Dec 2007
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
I joined PAI’s Public Policy & Strategic Initiatives division to develop country partners, elevate PAI's visibility in Europe, pitch work to a newly evolving set of foundation donors interested in global work on reproductive rights, and bring more coherence to international work and advocacy focus with U.S. Congress. - Managed the first major Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant, a pioneering award of ~$1M over 18 months to support country-level advocacy for reproductive health.
  • Ehlers Consulting
    Strategic Consultant
    Ehlers Consulting Jan 2002 - Oct 2003
As an independent consultant, I provided writing, editing, research, strategy, and philanthropic portfolio support to NGOs and journalists/authors covering public policy. Selected projects include:- World Resources Institute: Co-authored "Issue Brief" on implementation and enforcement of public participation policies at international institutions, working under the leadership of Frances Seymour.- HKH Foundation: Conducted initial scoping and research to identify strategic opportunities and alliances to elevate the rule of law and strengthen U.S. government's cooperative response on global issues. Worked with Harriet and Alison Barlow.- Betsy Taylor, now of Breakthrough Strategies: Supported early engagement/grassroots mobilization efforts on climate change.
  • Wallace Global Fund
    Associate Program Officer
Wallace Global Fund Nov 1996 - Dec 2001
I supported a grantmaking portfolio that broke new ground in the fields of sustainable forestry and international financial institution reform, as well as laid the early foundation for philanthropic engagement on climate change.- Selected to co-chair the 2001 annual conference of Environmental Grantmakers Association, representing billions in philanthropic resources from funders such as the Hewlett Foundation, the Packard Foundation , the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the MacArthur Foundation.- Supported portfolio of grants representing the first-ever philanthropic engagement on climate change in strategic partnership with Ford, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and MacArthur. Our efforts transformed the way the environmental community collaborated on climate in these early days: focusing on carbon tax, helping international financial institutions understand their relationship to climate, driving grassroots mobilization, and more.- Helped build innovative approach to funding for sustainable forestry, convening major players in the space (market initiatives, private sector NGOs, foundation staff) to map out a shared strategy, including with Home Depot, Rainforest Alliance, Forest Stewardship Council, and World Wildlife Fund.
  • Peace Corps
    Agroforestry Extension Agent
    Peace Corps Jul 1995 - Jun 1996
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
During this transformational period, I served as ambassador, cultural interpreter, and diplomat working in rural communities. I worked with various stakeholders and formed strong collaborative partnerships with community members to sustainably improve food security, livelihoods, and resilience. Due to civil unrest and conflict, I was evacuated from CAR; then, through a network of returned Peace Corps volunteers, I relocated temporarily to Haiti to work at Hospital Albert Schweitzer, started and funded by Larry and Gwen Mellon.
