I am a neuroscientist and my research group are using modern circuit mapping techniques to unravel brain pathways controlling appetite and eating behaviours. Current interests include pathways regulated by intrinsic hunger signals (e.g. the hormone, ghrelin) and also by external cues signalling food availability. Our work is relevant for all kinds of eating disorders, including Anorexia nervosa but also those that lead to obesity.I am currently Professor of Physiology/Neuroendocrinology at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg (2004-). Career highlights also include tenured positions held as Lecturer and Senior Lecture at the University of Cambridge, UK. As a PhD student in Cambridge (The Babraham Institute), I was privileged to work with Prof Gareth Leng during which time we provided the first evidence that growth hormone secretagogues (now known to be ghrelin mimetics) activate hypothalamic cells. This work paved the way to a research career focused on understanding the brain systems through which ghrelin operates, together with understanding the role of the central ghrelin signaling system in appetite, energy balance and reward. I am engaged internationally with many societies and organizations, notably the European College for Neurophsychopharmacology (for which I am Secretary), the International federation of Neuroendocrinology (for which I am Chair of the Programme Committee of the ICN2022 congress) and the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behaviour.
