I am a Senior Lecturer in Cornell’s Engineering Communications Program, where I teach written, oral, visual, and team communication. I also consult with writing programs across the globe, and develop instructional tools.From 2012-2023 I directed the Writing, Rhetoric, and Professional Communication (WRAP) program, within Comparative Media Studies/Writing, at MIT. I taught courses in Rhetoric, and taught writing and professional communication in subjects from Anthropology to Chemical Engineering. I am also a founder and a past chair of the steering committee of the Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network (BRAWN).My primary interests are in rhetorical genre theory, argumentation, and narrative theory; this has led to work in the rhetoric of slavery, in the study of how students learn to distinguish the genres of different disciplines and to transfer that knowledge across disciplines (through work with the Harvard Study of Undergraduate Writing), and in investigating the emerging genres and methodologies of interdisciplinary scholarship.Specialties: Engineering Communication, Writing across the Curriculum/Writing in the Disciplines, Contemporary Rhetoric, Genre Theory, Argumentation, Disciplinary Reasoning Patterns, Narrative Theory, Critical Race Theory, American Literature and Cultural Studies
