Books have been the heart of my professional work for almost thirty years and my personal life ever since I first memorized Yertle the Turtle cover to cover. (Yup, the first change agent who ever inspired me was a burping turtle.) I write books, “doctor” books, edit books, review books, and teach various aspects of book publishing and writing. I read and re-read books, I discuss and debate them, and I teach others about their wonder and their craft whenever I can.I’m the Creative Director of Stories of You Books, the publishing company I founded with my twin brother, Andy, in 2014. We publish only anthologies, a specialty that allows us to share a broad range of voices and explore the truths that are found at the intersection of many stories. Collecting both organizational and individual essays, we create books for the retail market on themes including creativity, mentorship, healing, and community. We also develop private label, branded-imprint, and fully customized anthologies for organizations, as well as designing workshop, workbook, and anthology packages. My experiences in book writing and publishing have run the gamut from the (apparently) glamorous to the (undeniably) menial, with stops at “weird,” “super weird,” and “seriously, what was I thinking?” in between. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this kind of eccentric path to others, it’s given me an unusually broad sense of the book and publishing market as well as a deep and useful appreciation for all of the specialized and often unsung work that goes into a successful book. When not working on Stories of You, client projects, my online journal Society Nineteen, or my own historical novel-in-progress-please-let-it-feel-finished-soon, I take naps, attempt to wean myself off diet cola, and refuse to iron.
