Putting my MLIS to use building a digital library with the hard working and innovative folks who comprise the Mobilizing Building Adaptation and Resilience initiative led by BC Housing’s Technical Research group. MBAR is a multi-year, multi-stakeholder knowledge and capacity building project. We are facilitating and piloting sustainable and resilient design and renovation of buildings. The aim is to create knowledge and practices that will help stabilize communities in a natural disaster and promote adaptation to the stresses of climate change.

Conducted an environmental scan to overview how public libraries in BC are implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This research deepened my knowledge of and appreciation for the critical role that public libraries play in their communities and the efforts that First Nations communities make to access library services. I prepared briefing and information notes on issues including copyright, privacy, access to information, and public library service to First Nations communities.

Kelowna, Bc

Under the mentorship of the University archivist, I developed functional classification filing systems to support records management for six different UBC departments. This iterative process included conducting assessments of shared drives, consultation with client departments, and referencing existing retention and disposition schedules. I prepared client-specific guidance documents to support implementation and long-term program maintenance. Working in a small team of distributed between Kelowna and Vancouver, I developed and implemented an online survey as part of an environmental scan, and analyzed those survey results to inform a records management project about digitizing financial records.

In this role I managed all aspects of publishing a scholarly, peer-reviewed digital journal of work contributed by students of the UBC School of Library, Archives, and Information Studies. The journal gave me a hands on opportunity to learn most aspects of the Open Journal System (OJS) platform which is used by over 10,000 scholarly journals world-wide.

The UBC Biomedical Library is located in the Vancouver General Hospital. I enjoyed my work in this special library where I provided basic reference support to library patrons, primarily medical staff and medical students and assisted patrons to use computer terminals, wifi, printers, and scanners. I made detailed use of the OPAC during a major weeding and consolidation of the BMB collection to move paper books and serials to other libraries and to semi-active storage.

For eight years, I led internal and external communications for the BC & Yukon Division of the MS Society of Canada. It was a pleasure to work with dedicated volunteers in BC and Yukon and collaborate with colleagues across the country to tell the story of people affected by multiple sclerosis. It was an honour to work with so many talented and dedicated people to raise awareness and funds to support services and medical research.

In this role, I increased media engagements from 20/year to 200/year. I trained staff and volunteers to speak on behalf of the organization on controversial or sensitive issues. I led the development of public education plans in support of the organization’s advocacy work to address male violence against women.

I trained and trained and supervised staff of the shelter for battered women and their children to ensure the best possible support for women transitioning away from violent relationships.
