Profile bio

About Suzanne Pierce

I’m an Assistant Attorney General (State of Washington) in the Torts Department, Seattle office. WHAT I DO: I have practiced civil litigation in Washington and Oregon for over 30 years. In my current practice I defend Washington State agencies from claims of personal injury, wrongful death, premises liability, negligent CPS investigation, foster care abuse and alleged failure to prevent crimes by parolees. I also have substantial experience in construction defect, product liability, insurance bad faith and defense of professionals from malpractice claims and disciplinary investigations.VALUES AND METHODS: I help clients achieve practical, cost-effective solutions in state, federal and appellate courts. I deliver experienced and strategic advocacy with a focus on personalized, creative resolution for a wide range of complex issues. I pride myself on responsiveness and continuous communication, working alongside my clients every step of the way. I strive to demonstrate excellence, integrity and legal acumen, not only to my clients but also to the parties, witnesses and other lawyers I encounter. I want to instill confidence in our civil justice system through listening, courtesy and a commitment to improve my cultural competencies.RESULTS: I have won defense verdicts in complex trials and arbitrations, dismissals upon motions in precedential Washington cases, and (where client-appropriate) settled claims to end the distraction of litigation to ongoing client business. I've hired and trained associate attorneys and managed the Seattle office of a regional law firm, expanding its attorney base sixfold and bringing in several new insurer clients.PROJECTS AND PASSIONS: Prior to my current position I was often retained by insurance carriers to represent their insureds, and was panel counsel for more than a dozen insurers. I have been employed at the City of Seattle and private law firms. I have written claims-handling guidelines and delivered presentations to lawyers and claims professionals. Additionally, I have served on various Bar Association committees including as a Disciplinary Adjunct. I have written self-help manuals and templates for low-income litigants (primarily women), assisted queer (LG&T) litigants pro bono, and represented guardians ad litem at trial in claims of child neglect and abuse. I am an advocate for transgender and neurodiverse youth, including assisting in name changes and access to gender-affirming clothing and medical care.
