While we understand that society is uneven, and inequality is systemic, little is clear about how social patterns have brought about the ecological and climate crises we face today. We weave together basic (or "Western") science techniques, critical social theory, and social/historical investigations to better understand how human ideology and action shape the functions of ecosystems, from the molecular to continental scales. We are modeling and demanding a new culture for academic science, wherein compassion, reparations mindsets, and humility fuel creative, emancipatory questions.

Honored to be elected to the Board of Trustees at the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation, which supports the operations and governance of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, one of the oldest Long Term Ecological Research sites in the United States.

I am a member of a century-old community of National Geographic Explorers who pursue greater understanding and protection of the natural world with the direct support of the National Geographic Society.

In collaboration with art curators, I will develop a narrative that integrates the historical role of plant collections and home gardening in Europe with emerging ideas of modernity, class, and the justification of colonialism.

Aside from research, I teach environmental science to ages 6-9 as a form of science outreach and science equity practice. I also work with the Junior Center to facilitate socially-conscious STEM learning opportunities to East Bay community members of all ages.

Researched literature for the "Our Global Kitchen" exhibit (2013) assisted with research used to connect green sea turtle populations in the Palmyra Atoll in the Central Pacific (see Naro-Maciel et al. 2014). Conducted research for Dr. Eleanor Sterling on the aye-aye vocalization technology (Daubentonia madagascariensis) and southeast Asian primate conservation.
