Dr. Suzanne van Eekelen is a researcher and consultant in geotechnical engineering and an expert consultant in the field of ground improvement, geosynthetic reinforcement, geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankments and retaining walls. She has been involved in many ground improvement, retaining walls and piled embankment projects and is specialized in laboratory experiments and field monitoring. She is chairing the Dutch working groups ‘Design Guideline Basal Reinforced Piled Embankments’ and ‘Design Guideline Retaining Walls and Abutments of Reinforced Soil’.She wrote over 100 scientific publications and serves as a member in the Editorial Boards of the international scientific journals 'Geosynthetics International' and ‘Geotextiles and Geomembranes’. She was a teacher in courses in Europe and several other countries like Brazil, Malaysia, Egypt, Spain and South-Korea and was a speaker or keynote speaker in many international conferences.Suzanne van Eekelen received the IGS Award of the International Geosynthetics Society for her research on basal reinforced piled embankments in 2014, the Award for the best paper in Geosynthetics International in 2020, the best paper in Geotextiles and Geomembranes in 2012, two Honourable mentions as one of the Best Papers in Geotextiles and Geomembranes in 2011 and 2015 and the Dutch Keverling Buisman-Science award in 2011.
