Open View Farm, a small family farm located in the rolling hills of Conway, MA, raises Shropshire and Romney-Coopworth sheep, grows vegetables for market, and hosts nature workshops. The farm was started in 2005 with the goal of creating a welcoming environment in which people of all ages and backgrounds could connect with nature. I joined Open View Farm for a two-year sabbatical—to live on a beautiful farm, care for a flock of sheep, perform general farm maintenance and small construction projects, and act as the liaison to public visitors. This experience enabled me to slow down, reconnect with my values, and chart a new course for my life.

When HMC Architects, a 400-person firm with nine offices in CA, NV, and AZ, acquired Beverly Prior Architects in 2011, my business development and marketing efforts focused on our civic and justice markets. My primary responsibilities included:- Strategizing project pursuits;- Developing Keynote and Powerpoint presentation for project interviews;- Relationship building, lead development, and market research; and - Proposal production and writing.In November 2011, I was chosen as the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Knowledge Scholar to the Academy of Architecture for Justice (AAJ) Conference.

Beverly Prior Architects was an award-winning 20-person architecture firm specializing in education, civic, and justice projects. Joining the firm in 2000 as an intern architect, I was an integral project member on the ACORN Woodland Elementary / EnCompass Academy project in Oakland, the new Placer County Sheriff Facility, and several projects for Santa Cruz City Schools. In 2003, I became the business development champion of our K-12 schools market, which centered on relationship building with school clients and consultants and performing market research. Over the next couple of years, I transitioned into marketing full-time. My responsibilities as marketing consultant and then marketing manager included:- Building relationships with potential clients and consultants;- Tracking school bonds and potential projects and maintaining an extensive client database; - Producing project proposals, including managing in-house project teams and consultants and contributing technical narrative;- Designing boards and powerpoint presentations for interviews;- Developing and updating website content;- Rendering architectural drawings for inclusion in marketing materials; and- Training new marketing staff, performing new employee trainings, and developing the office manual. I also received communication training in conflict resolution, interpersonal negotiation, mental models, and leadership.
