Maintained and monitored multi-region Kubernetes clusters (GKE) as part of a platform team serving over 5,000 production applications and 4,000 developers across 5 time zones. Built a paved path for cloud-native development that allowed development teams to deploy self-managed Kubernetes on GKE for the first time, expanding the capability to integrate cloud-native services and decentralizing ownership. Maintained parity with existing CI/Cd processes to minimize migration time off the managed platform. 10 teams were trialing the solution with little platform team involvement in their setup or operations.Built internal team consensus to replace a policy framework with the Kyverno open source tool. Eliminated 2 custom webhooks with Kyverno policies. Used Kyverno mutations to adjust scaling and resourcing of a widely used proxy component, saving an estimated $100k annual compute cost. This solution required no action from 600+ global product teams which accelerated time to savings realization by 6 months. Co-presented our migration strategy and implementation to the open source community at KubeCon 2023.Collaborated with a cross-team partner to design a full GitOps solution with ArgoCD and Terraform that bootstrapped support applications in customer-managed GKE clusters. This eliminated any need for the developer teams to install or manage these applications and seamlessly integrated their services into our cross-project networking solution.

Planned and implemented a complete migration of almost 20 services into Kubernetes. Implemented continuous deployment in a GitOps manner leveraging ArgoCD, Github Workflows and Kustomize. The project is planned to complete with production deployment by Q3 2022.Wrote and implemented policies and procedures for HiTrust certification across three policy domains. Achieved official HiTrust certification in March 2022.Implemented cloud architecture refactors that directly led to increased stability and confidence in the system; enabling the acceleration of software delivery to production from 12 weeks to 4 weeks. Championed the use of Open Source Software tools to improve monitoring and system observability. Instrumented our in-house applications with Prometheus and OpenTelemetry. Developed dashboards in Grafana to assist on-call developer teams in understanding the state of the system. Architected distributed deployments of Grafana Loki and Grafana Tempo as log and trace aggregation systems in AWS Fargate; a solution novel enough to be invited to guest blog about it on the Grafana website. Migration from a legacy log aggregation system to Grafana Loki led to a reduced cost of ownership and more active use of the logging system by developers. Managed a team of two operations engineers and directed the team's daily and long term focus.

Developed and maintained infrastructure as code and application orchestration to automate system creation and maintenance on multiple customer system deployments. Developed an automatic provisioning and configuration solution using RedHat Ansible that reduced a manual multi-day system deployment to less than 30 minutes for a 30 host deployment. Authored test suites using python and Docker containers to automatically validate Ansible roles. Integrated the ElasticSearch stack (ELK) and Elastic Beats as a monitoring and log aggregation solution for multiple systems. Developed ingest filters for Logstash and visualization dashboards in Kibana/Grafana to add centralized logging analysis, transaction traceability, and data analytics of our systems. Managed the entire ELK stack with Ansible roles.Led culture changes in teams to instill a production-level discipline embracing automation, monitoring, and a focus on the end-user experience. Led a portfolio of contracts for an Army radar based ISR platform, valued at over $7 million annually in aggregate. Managed project budget, schedule, subcontracts. Guided the technical roadmap for software sustainment and new feature development for multiple fielded aircraft. Fostered and improved relations with the customer that directly led to an increased annual contract value of 35% over previous years and an increased work-share on critical user facing products. Proposed architecture changes to modernize a research system to a Docker container delivery solution, selected for contract award at a value of approximately $800k. Led the design and proof-of-concept for the Docker build and integration, and guided the team through implementation.Deployed as a field service engineer to Helmand Province, Afghanistan for over 100 days, providing 24/7 software support for a sensor exploitation system used by US and British Marines during combat operations.
