I worked as a member of the technical services department at the United Wambo Joint Venture Open Cut coal mine in the role of Graduate Mining Engineer.In this role I've primarily been tasked with performing data analytic work by utilising my experience in programming and computer science. I started off with basic automation of excel spreadsheets by writing VBA code which would cleanly pull data out of PDF files and perform basic operations on the dataset to output weekly and monthly charts. These were regular tasks completed manually by the team and the automation would save several hours per week. Completing the above tasks successfully, I took on more complex work in the creation of a program which visualised all truck dumps and loads within any complex polygon inside within the pit. To complete this project I utilised a ray casting algorithm and learned about code optimisation to efficiently cull a dataset of 200,000+ entries based on coordinates which fell within a given polygon. I also created an easy to access filtering system which would slice the data further based on the coal seam or waste extracted, crew number, truck type etc. The use case of this program was to validate material coding of dump location vs actual locations, improve coal reconciliation, reduce inpit dumping/overloads and give a quick visualisation of all dumping/loading across the full site.
