About Swetha Kumar

The current COVID-19 pandemic, though disastrous and completely unexpected in this age of healthcare and technology, has put in limelight the importance of vaccines and biomanufacturing! The world has witnessed pharmaceutical giants’ team up to manufacture vaccines at record speed, to enable speedy distribution! Being part of the Betenbaugh group, at Johns Hopkins University, has helped me understand and work towards better addressing the needs of the mammalian biomanufacturing community through the Advanced Mammalian Bio-manufacturing Innovation Center (AMBIC), an industrial-academic-government partnership dedicated to mammalian cell culture development, with focus on Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells. My graduate research at Hopkins led me to gain experience and expertise in various facets of upstream process development, including stable cell line development. Though I started off as an entirely lab-based researcher, I utilized the opportunity to generate, learn and analyze omics’ datasets of CHO transcriptome, proteome and epigenome. I accomplished this by conducting extensive cell culture experiments to understand the impact and differences in varying media formulations, cell age and development. Apart from science, I am a trained Indian classical dancer and have been performing at venues across India and USA, as part of Shakti at JHU, an Indian competitive classical team at Hopkins. Pre-COVID, I enjoyed spending time outdoors travelling and playing with friends. If any part of my journey resonates with or interests you, let’s connect!

Listed skills include Protein Purification, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, Elisa, Pcr, and 18 others.
