As an applications technologist III, I supported new product development in the pharmaceutical coatings business. I served as the technical lead on programs and projects involving coating, color and flavor in order to build new create new business opportunities.

I led a small team in the development of new materials for a variety of markets. Our group focused on creating new business opportunities through the insertion of new materials and processes that solve related industry problems. I served as the technical lead for many diverse research and development projects that span from protective coatings and optical coatings to ink formulations and materials that service the printed electronics industry.

While at PNNL I worked on two projects related to hydrogen storage and hydrogen activation. We examined the use of carbon, boron, nitrogen (CBN) compounds as liquids for chemical hydrogen storage, and also studied the mechanism of hydrogen activation by several frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) using DSC. • Improved gravimetric capacity (wt% H2) for a CBN fuel blend by ~28%• Characterized all products due to hydrogen release from a novel fuel blend • Determined kinetics of hydrogen release using gas burette data• 1st to determine rate constants and thermodynamics of hydrogen activation by multiple FLP systems using DSC• Developed catalytic reductions using FLPs involving olefins, imines, ketones and aldehydes

During my graduate studies I synthesized novel ligands and metal complexes (Ir, Rh, Ru, Co) for the conversion of saturated fatty acids to mono-unsaturated fatty acids via selective alkane dehydrogenation. The goal was to use this methodology to replace fossil fuels with renewable fatty acid feedstocks for the synthesis of bulk commodity chemicals. • 1st reported site-selective dehydrogenation of a coordinated ligand• Isolated and characterized reaction intermediates for mechanistic studies• Published the synthesis and reactivity of a novel anionic iridium complex• Mentored incoming graduate and undergraduate students

As a paid summer PhD intern at Ashland, I was charged with solving a problem involving the continuous casting process of a new composite material already in operation at a pilot plant. The catalyst used in the thermal curing step was losing performance dramatically over the course of a single run (8 h), and this was resulting in the loss of ~50% of the polymer resin. • Improved catalyst performance lifetime by 350% (from 4 h to >18 h)• Collaborated with lab technicians, application engineers, and process engineers• Designed new formulations to improve composite color consistency• Presented findings to technical and non-technical team members
