Provided direct patient care at a fast-paced 13 location office examining upwards of 60 patients per day. My role was to assist the medical provider in surgery and during patient exams; work included documentation in the SOAP format and handling surgical instrumentation including its cleaning and sterilization. Additionally, I performed advanced flap repairs to defects remaining from the removal of biopsy proven skin cancers in order to provide the best cosmetic result without restricting function and minimizing tissue distortion. Such duties required knowledge of clean technique, suturing, and building patient rapport through communication skills to ensure effective patient teaching. As the leader of my 5-member squad of nurses and combat medics, I worked to ensure their personal and professional needs were met on and off the field. To do this, I assessed squad climate and provided evaluations and counseling to soldiers; encouraged them in their pursuit and maintenance of a high level of performance. I also stayed attuned to internal squad communication between ranks in order to create a harmonious environment. Additionally, due to the professional nature of our work, I ensured the completion of official licensure and continuing education requirements of my squad. In 2008 I attended the US Army Warrior Leader Course and was rated by my superiors to have superior skills in leadership, teamwork and research ability.

The U.S. Army provided me with invaluable training second to none, displaying medicine in a way that was dynamic and integral to my medical education. Serving in Iraq allowed me an opportunity to rise as a leader and apply my medical skills as a medical surgical nurse in a 20- bed immediate care ward (ICW). I was responsible for patients ranging from coalition forces, nationals to insurgents. My care consisted of assessments, wound care, medication administration, rehabilitative therapy and electronic medical documentation. Other responsibilities included initiation of IV lines, arterial blood gas draws, NG placement, administration of blood products and also IV therapy. During this time, I also cross trained in the ICU/OR and became certified in ACLS. During my time in the ICW I was always concerned with the safety of my patients and fellow soldiers, I had zero falls, need sticks, or accidents. I also assisted with maintenance and accountability of vital medical equipment with zero losses or damages.

As intermediate care ward training officer, I was the liaison between 14 ICW soldiers and battalion command, ensuring completion of training requirements. Instructed and/or ensured completion of 18 Army Warrior Task classes required by the 62nd Medical Brigade. Coordinated with clinical staff ensuring that the 12 in-service classes were team oriented and attended by all 14 enlisted; reported monthly on training to education. Beyond this, I also assumed responsibility for mastering newly introduced PCA equipment and developing its training curriculum and skills testing. Furthermore, this training was relayed to all members of the ICW and ICU staff to guarantee safe and effective pain management of our patient population.

Founder of grassroots presidential campaign organization. Successfully grew the group to 110 members with some commuting from an hour away in order to participate in outreach events within the broader community. Networked with the local political establishment to attend the state fair and the group also successfully provided multiple student targeted events. Successfully established phone-bank and on-foot operations to share campaign information.

Closely volunteered with graduate researchers studying a variety of anti-inflammatory drugs on traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats, I assisted through surgery, performed perfusions, extractions and collection of brain, liver and serum specimens, medication administration, and performed lesion analysis and imaging of brain specimens. I sought this specific lab after witnessing the lack of thereputic treaments and protocols for care during my tenure as a nurse during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Camp Little Giant is a summer program that focuses on serving individuals with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities and I was happy to serve as their camp nurse, providing medical care to upwards of 50 participants each week. During my time at Camp Little Giant, I worked with participants spanning from age 8 to adulthood. My responsibilities included medication administration to campers, treating injuries as they presented, daily assessments and patient documentation, as well as listening and counseling participants in times of need and distress. I also developed a spreadsheet and labeling system to foster efficiency and safe handling of medication inventory and administration.
