Glycosidases are hydrolytic enzymes that play key roles in glycan processing in all forms of life. Malfunction of these enzymes can lead to various pathogens such as diabetes or Gaucher’s disease, and upregulation is linked to Parkinsonism and cancer. Alternatively, glycosidases are used in the biocatalytic conversion of plant biomass to sustainable biofuels and other green chemicals. During my PhD I designed and synthesized chemical probes and (ir)reversible inhibitors for multiple glycosidase families, to be able to study their enzymatic structure, function and activity. My PhD research resulted in 4 first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals. As part of the graduate programme I supervised 6 (international) bachelor and master students in the lab on a daily basis and assisted several bachelor student practical courses. Initially I provided in-depth literature studies on various projects to the senior Scientists. Later I worked as Process Chemist on the production of food-additives in kilogram scale under GMP conditions. Additionally I developed a synthetic route towards an additive on laboratory scale and investigated its translation towards big-scale production.ChemConnection is a contract research and manufacturing organization (CRO/CMO) offering services in chemical process R&D, and API manufacture under cGMP in a state of the art cGMP compliant facility. http://www.chemconnection.eu/
