I have been working in healthcare since I began teaching CPR and first aid courses. I throughly enjoyed learning about each individual I helped train and their journey into healthcare. I began at Sunnyside Home and Community Centre volunteering in the secure units. Once a week I would assist the residents in music therapy, which I may have enjoyed more than the residents!After I began my program, my first placement was at a Schlegel Villages home (University Gates) as a student nurse. I would perform morning care, administer morning medications with my preceptor, including some injections. I would assist residents with meals, bathing and hygiene, dressing, and voiding. I learned so much patience with these residents as most have some form of dementia. The most rewarding part of that placement was the pure joy from the staff, the residents, and the residents families after receiving detailed, patient-cantered care.My second placement began at Grand River Hospital on 5 south, the Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU), an acute medicine floor. Each day I had one assigned patient that I would perform all assessments, read over orders, administer medications (injections such as, insulin and dalteparin) around the clock. I loved this environment and the team on the floor. This experience is what assured me that bedside nursing is exactly the kind of nursing I hope to go into.For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a nurse, and to this day I have never had a doubt. It's my passion, as well as my dream.
