About Sydni Ratliff-Phillips, M.A.

If you are looking for that one girl you met at a talk or conference who studies superheroes, you found her! I study race, gender, and sexuality in superheroes, and I am working toward my PhD in American Studies at Rutgers University, Newark. This extends from comic books and novels to film and television! I believe examining these sources can tell us what we find important as a society, reflect real-world issues, and sometimes offer potential solutions. As a recent graduate from the history master’s program at the University of Delaware, I have researched superheroes at a number of historical intersections like religion, Black women’s history, and American moral panics. I had the pleasure of completing this work as a Mary Church Terrell scholar and a scholar in the Hagley Program of Technology, Capitalism, and Culture. However, I’ve also done important, nonfictional research through internships with the National Parks Service. At Fort McHenry, I produced information on enslaved people during the War of 1812 and a public research guide for visitors. With the National Historic Landmarks Program, I assisted in determining the historical eligibility of nominations pertaining to nineteenth century Black American history. Please feel free to look at my profile and drop a line if anything interests you!
