While on staff at Newsday for 35 years, I was a general assignment reporter, covered education, and later wrote the Eats column and the "a la Carter" column. I continued writing "a la Carter" for another five years. I was the founding editor of Kidsday, Newsday's section "for kids and by kids, mostly." While at Newsday, I also freelanced for national publications. I was a summer intern at the Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig (1966) and the Detroit Free Press (1967), where I shared in a Pulitzer won by the editorial staff for coverage of the riots. I am a past president of the Newswomen's Club of NY and for more than two decades was a trustee of the Anne O'Hare McCormick Scholarship Fund, which gives scholarships to young women attending the Columbia University School of Journalism. I teach "Ethnic Eating: a World of Adventure" and other food-related courses at Duke / OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) in Durham, NC.
