About Sylvia Fitting
My overall career goal is to develop a better understanding of how cellular function is affected by drug abuse + HIV/HIV-1 protein infection. My research is focusing on the cellular, functional, and behavioral mechanisms of the neurotoxic consequences of morphine and HIV-1 Tat interactions on the central nervous system. Up to now I have published a total of 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals, out of which I am first author on 17 of these papers. My papers are readily accessible via the database online “Web of Knowledge” (http://apps.webofknowledge.com/summary.do?SID=2FaPff39cGnJACfP38g&product=UA&qid=1&search_mode=GeneralSearch) and via PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=Fitting%20S). During my Ph.D. career, I have had an extensive training in behavioral neuroscience, and during my postdoctoral career, to date, I have been able to extend my skill sets into more cellular neuroscience, by specifically looking at the structural changes in synaptic function caused by drug abuse + HIV/HIV-1 protein comorbidity. Currently I am receiving training in a new method/approach, i.e. intracellular electrophysiology, specifically whole-cell patch-clamp recordings and additional complementary training in molecular neuroscience, including pharmacological ion imaging, neuronal gene-targeting, and transfection approaches. I am specifically interested in the question how opioid receptor (OR) signaling converges with HIV-1 Tat to disrupt ion homeostasis and ion channel activity/expression in vitro, which eventually leads to excitotoxicity and spine losses. The future will involve the incorporation of all my in vitro expertise developed over my postdoctoral career, and taking it to an in vivo model system, combining molecular, physiological, and behavioral approaches.
