Empowering Tomorrow’s Conservation Leaders | Professional Development Expert for NGOs | Founder of Professional Development for Good Consulting & My Mentor Nonprofit I’m Dr. Sylvia Atsalis, a passionate advocate for developing the talents and skills of young conservationists. I hold a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Anthropology from the City University of New York. My journey has taken me from groundbreaking research on nocturnal lemurs in Madagascar as a National Geographic Scholar, to exploring menopause in aging apes under an NIH grant. As a Fulbright Scholar in Suriname, I’ve guided students in primate ecology, effective communication, conservation and field research methods and many career skills.I’ve designed and led programs at Northeastern Illinois University and the University of Chicago, advising hundreds of students aspiring to careers in the sciences and the nonprofit sectors. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: As the founder of Professional Development for Good (PD4G), I’ve trained young talent of NGOs like Conservation International and the Lemur Conservation Foundation. Teams show marked improvement in their professionalism, strategic communication, time management, and problem-solving through root cause analysis.MENTORSHIP: In 2024, I launched My Mentor, a nonprofit initiative that nurtures emerging conservation leaders in high biodiversity regions. The initiative currently supports 30+ participants across six countries through tailored mentoring, helping them define their professional missions, discover talents, and tell their stories. The unique approach fosters confidence, resilience, and global perspective. Constantly expanding my knowledge base (more recently in neuroscience, mindfulness, and storytelling) I ensure that the young professionals I mentor are equipped to meet the challenges of today’s world with a variety of resources and skills.
