I am a materials/synthetic chemist currently working to develop new radioactive PET tracers useful in the early identification of Alzheimer's disease. My areas of expertise include organic synthesis and organocatalysis, working with radioactive materials and radiochemistry, the application of chemical photoswitches and photochemistry, materials chemistry (including polymer synthesis and biocompatible polymers), as well as standard chemical and material characterization techniques.

Research AssociateThe Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) Apr 2020 - PresentMontreal, Quebec, CanadaI work as part of a team developing new technologies for incorporating radioactive 18F into novel tracers for PET scans. My position involves small-molecule synthesis, purification, and analysis; optimization of biological and structural properties; radiochemistry; and in vitro and in vivo testing. -
Postdoctoral FellowThe Montreal Neurological Institute Oct 2017 - Mar 2020Montreal, Canada AreaI identify and develop new candidate tracers for PET scanning, with the goal of earlier identification and improved tracking of the progress of Alzheimer's disease. My work involves identifying candidate target molecules that interact with receptors associated with Alzheimer's, and adapting their synthesis to allow the incorporation of a radioactive isotope (18F or 11C) which can then be monitored by PET scans, with the ultimate goal of making PET a more useful technique for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. -
Postdoctoral FellowThe University Of Manchester Jan 2015 - Jun 2017Manchester, United KingdomMy current research was focused on developing new, switchable catalysts (using either light or chemical stimuli) that allow for efficient and selective synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other fine chemicals. We work in teams to synthesize, screen, and optimize these new catalysts. -
Ph.D. CandidateMcgill University Sep 2009 - Dec 2014Montreal, CanadaI completed my Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry in the McGill University Chemistry Department. My research interests centred around designing and using materials with interesting optical properties, especially those containing the azobenzene chromophore. My project involved synthesizing and studying these materials, with applications in interfacing optics with biology, energy conversion, as well as expanding our fundamental knowledge of these interesting materials. My research has allowed me to become proficient in several interesting spectroscopic techniques, including development of an optical pump-probe apparatus capable of analyzing the time-dependent change in azo-functionalized materials exposed to visible light. I also used UV-vis spectroscopy to characterize the photoresponse of new azo-materials, as well as IR and Raman vibrational spectroscopies, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry to characterize synthetic products. -
Teaching AssistantMcgill University Sep 2009 - Apr 2013Montreal, CanadaWhile conducting my Ph.D. research, I also served as a teaching assistant. My duties included grading lab reports, scheduling and conducting interviews with students to assess comprehension, and helping to modernize and rewrite sections of the instructional manuals. I also ran a tutorial section, which included crafting and presenting lectures and practise assignments. I was awarded the 2014 T. Sterry Hunt Award for Teaching Excellence for my work in the physical chemistry laboratory. Courses taught included:Chemistry 393: Physical Chemistry Laboratory 2 (laboratory)Chemistry 214: Physical Chemistry for the Biological Sciences II (tutorial)Chemistry 112F: General Chemistry (laboratory) -
Research AssistantTrent University Sep 2007 - Jul 2009Peterborough, CanadaI worked as an undergraduate research assistant in the Inorganic Materials Research Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Andrew J. Vreugdenhil. Our research focused on the formulation, application and testing of new organic-inorganic hybrid coatings to protect aircraft aluminum from corrosion. This work involved synthesising new organic crosslinking agents, incorporating them into silica sol-gel coatings, and then coating aluminum to assess their ability to hinder corrosion. In addition to the publication of a manuscript in a chemistry journal, we also obtained a US and Canadian patent on the technology we developed. -
Teaching AssistantTrent University Sep 2007 - Apr 2009Peterborough, CanadaDuring my undergraduate studies, I also worked as a teaching assistant and exam grader. My duties included instructing and supervising students in the laboratory, grading laboratory reports, and marking final examination papers.Courses taught included:Chemistry 2500H and 2510H: Elements of Physical Chemistry I and II (teaching assistant)Chemistry 100: Introductory Chemistry (teaching assistant and exam grader)
