I started my career as a molecular biologist interested in epigenetics, stem cells and autoimmunity, and I participated in biomedical research in Greece and in USA for 10 years, utilizing animal models. However, staying in San Francisco and then New York, I have always been intrigued about where our crops come from and whether they are safe. Questions which intrigued me were; How long did this avocado travel before landing on my plate? Can we produce enough of them so we all eat one every day? Therefore, in 2019 I changed focus to applied plant science.Modern people demand a lot from their food while having limited time and space. People just need more and more of increasingly better quality of crops! Therefore, it comes as no surprise that novel, sustainable systems of integrated and vertical farming match their needs better and at the right place. However, our planet demands a gentler approach from us if future generations are going to live here. Thus, employing modern hydroponic systems with reduced water and ecological footprints for growing crops is my main interest now. The day of fossil-free growing will soon dawn!
