A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1980, I provided effective leadership as the first director of the School of Visual Arts, and as department head of the Department of Art and Art History. I acted as program chair for the Visual Communication Design Program, as was the creator and founder and a senior creative director of the Visual Design Studio now named FOURdesign. This unique internship program integrated corporate alumni networking, which helped students in the design program achieve their career goals and gain employment through alumni professional and corporate affiliate contacts across the nation. I also acted as the first director of the Collaborative for Creative Technologies in the Arts and Design CCTAD. In addition, was instrumental in establishing the first terminal degree graduate program wthin the School of Visual Arts SOVA, the Master of Fine Arts degree in creative technologies.As a working artist, I have had the opportunity to exhibit works in 2D and 3D montage, digital collage, painting, jewelry, and sculpture in more than 95 national and international art shows. Works are held in permanent museum collections in France, Germany, Mexico, and New Zealand.As a Professor of Visual Communication Design at Virginia Tech I taught a variety of courses, i.e. Intro to Graphic Design, Intermediate Graphic Design Digital Art and Design, Advanced Typography, 3D Packaging Design, and Visual Branding Design. At Radford University in Virginia as an Instructor of Art I taught Illustration Design, Foundations in Art, Sculpture and Jewelry / Metalsmithing.

In 2001 as a research, outreach and educational initiative Professor T.Truman Capone became the Founder & Creator of the Visual Design Studio (VDS4) at Virginia Tech. VDS4 acted as an internal organization that facilitated collaboration between faculty and students and provide professional, service, and research opportunities within design. VDS4 is an entrepreneurial student professional internship program and vital educational component for the Visual Communication Design Program within the School of Visual Arts (SOVA) at Virginia Tech. In 2009- 2010, VDS4 was re-branded internally to “FourDesign”, an alteration meant to bring the four pillars of our mission (Education, Outreach, Research, and Exhibition) to the forefront of our operations. With offices located in Henderson Hall. Since VDS4 development in 2001 over seventy interns had benefited from this VDS4 experience since 2001 and the newest graduates are experiencing strong starting positions on a national level in advertising, creative technologies, 3D Packaging and Visual Branding and visual communication design.The founding objectives of VDS4 / FourDesign: are Education: Providing students with professional experience rarely available to undergraduates.Outreach: Functioning as a liaison to groups outside the University community seeking design services.Research: Adhering to the research mission of Virginia Tech.Exhibition: Serving as a venue in which visual design products are displayed and available for community.
