Esher Sewage Treatment Works

Senior Project Manager responsible for delivering a number of projects which form part of the AMP 5 waste network baseload contract for Thames Water. These included initiating a 5000m2 hydraulic flooding storm attenuation shaft and new Pumping Station and rising mains in Fleet, Hants and a key Sustainable Urban Drainage retrofit scheme pilot in Counters Creek.

Thames Gateway Water Treatment Works, Beckton Desalinisation Plant

Senior Project Manager responsible for organising the procurement approach and delivery of a package of resilience measures to the Desalinisation Plant which is the key drought contingency Plant for Thames Water. Works include covering the lamella clarifier tanks to ensure the 150Mld output of the plant can be maintained. A number of people focussed minor works were also scoped.

Beckton Sewage Treatment Works

Senior Project Manager seconded to Thames Water’s Capital Delivery team to deliver the £8 million power upgrade to the Beckton site in time for the Olympics. A project that normally takes 2.5 years was delivered in 20 weeks and won Mott Macdonald Programme and Commercial Management Project Manager of the Year Award 2013.The project also enables the current AMP5 Thames Tidal Quality Improvements at Beckton. Responsible for leading an integrated programme management team with UK Powernetworks and J Murphy and Sons. Successful delivery of an accelerated new 70MVA supply for the Olympics and the completed permanent increased supply of 105MVA. The role included negotiating and securing a number of key consents from the Environment Agency, a private landowner and the local council to a challenging timeframe. This upgrade was then followed by the early off hire of the 8MVA temporary generation plant. Considerable efficiencies were realised.

Being the Olympic Programme Manager for Traffic Operations encompassed the scoping, control, coordination and delivery of the necessary changes to systems, people, processes and infrastructure required for the Games. This included the delivery of signal schemes to protect the Olympic Route Network, CCTV, Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, roadworks embargoes, consumption of GPS tracking data, network monitoring and reporting of performance metrics and the Games Time command and control structures. My attention to active risk and issue management plus scope and change control were vital in delivering this complex programme. The variety and extent of the stakeholders including funders, clients, suppliers and governance bodies required a careful balance at which I am adept. I skilfully managed the integration with other programmes to ensure synergy, strategic alignment and to avoid duplication.

Also, successfully delivered the FREEFLOW Research and Development programme initially as Project Manager for TfL and latterly as SRO of the Consortium of 11 members from Industry, Academia and Local Authorities. This cutting edge research turned data into intelligence to improve traffic management operations and enhance information to drivers. Technology Strategy Board, the UK's national innovation agency funded and highly acclaimed this Intelligent Transport Systems proof of concept initiative.

Programme and Business Manager of the Traffic and Technology Department of Congestion Charging and Traffic Enforcement. Responsible for delivering the high profile Operational Dynamic Traffic Management programme for the London Congestion Charging Schemes and the Enforcement Infrastructure for the Low Emission Zone. Programme Managed the extensive Road Pricing Technology Trials which required the procurement and coordination of teams of consultants and the setting up and management of large contracts. All programmes were successfully delivered to a challenging timescale including the launches of the world's biggest traffic management schemes.

A £100m+ programme of works to accelerate the maintenance of the road network, introduce measures to protect local residents and manage a complex range of stakeholders to enable the launch of the London based Congestion Charging Scheme. This involved my active engagement across 33 Boroughs in London and internal TfL departments to ensure the programme delivered on time and ensured best value across the portfolio of activities being carried out. It required my detailed and active monitoring of progress and financial management.

Bafata Then Gabu In Guinea Bissau

Following on from my work as a volunteer and now speaking Portuguese creole, I was asked to join a Dutch funded development project focussing on Integrated Village Land Management. My speciality was horticulture, tree planting and bushfire education. I worked predominantly with women via agroforestry extension workers and improved their lives though income generation and the inclusion in key environmental discussions of the village elders. This engagement with complex hierarchies and village politics has held me in good stead for many later career opportunities. Due to the strict self sustaining principles used, this project and its teachings was continued by locals without external funding or advisers during and following several coup d'états.

Farim, Guinea Bissau

Volunteer sent to work at a remote forestry department outstation to address bush fire problems. Taught local women to teach each other how to build efficient fuel building stoves as a vehicle to discuss environmental issues relating to firewood. This initiative enabled over 75 households to become more environmentally sustainable. Following a successful application for additional funding, this micro-project was then continued as a Comic Relief funded post.
