In October of 2015, I was offered a position as a Infection Control Practitioner for the Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Medical Center based in Richmond, Virginia. As a key contributor for one of the leading facilities in one of the nation’s largest hospital systems. I am charged in overseeing CJW's infection prevention and control program in coordination with their Quality department. I am primarily accountable for ensuring program compliance, managing outbreak investigations, educating hospital staff on preventative measures, and consulting with the CDC, county, and state health departments. In addition to my core responsibilities, I routinely communicate with hospital staff and leadership teams in regards to the detection, surveillance, prevention of communicable diseases, and healthcare associated infections(HAI's) by assisting department heads in developing, implementing and updating unified control standards to reduce HAI's and the spread of infection. I also present formal presentations on and maintain reporting systems regarding healthcare associated infections and communicable diseases for the CJW facility with various regulatory bodies.

While obtaining my MPH, I secured a high-profile internship with the Colorado Department of Public Health where I assisted EIP staff in the surveillance of invasive MRSA samples from hospitals located in Arapahoe, Adams, Denver, Jefferson and Douglas Counties. I was charged in reviewing cases on-site; researching affected patient’s medical condition, health status, and point of origination; and surveying both MRSA specimens and influenza antiviral and PCV13 vaccine effectiveness. I additionally researched hospital demographics, diagnosis codes, and treatment decisions to prevent further infection within the community. Most notably, I was trusted to make recommendations to senior staff and the CDC related to process innovations; suggesting and implementing changes related to the collection of alternate variables impacting programs to include the 2014/2015 Influenza Database.

From 2014 to 2015, I was contracted by the CDPHE to serve as a member of an EIP surveillance team (EIPT). In this role, I was charged in assisting the team leader with the Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Use Prevalence Survey which was being conducted at 16 hospitals in the State of Colorado. Over the course of this assignment, I identified patients requiring additional medical record review by determining healthcare associated infection (HAI) status and case eligibility for inclusion in the prevalence survey. I also obtained and reviewed medical records to make HAI determinations, collected antimicrobial use data to include data used in evaluating the quality of antimicrobial drug prescribing, and submitted survey data into a web-based electronic data management system developed by the CDC.

While finishing my bachelors in Public Health, I was able to secure a position as a Health Outreach Program Coordinator for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. In this role, I was charged in coordinating program logistics, assisting in the development of annual plans, and partnering with affiliates such as St. Francis, to gain greater access to diverse populations within the homeless community to include women’s shelters, youth homeless, and drug-addicted clients. Over the course of my tenure, I was able to successfully systematize and document ongoing and future activities pertaining to the development, implementation, maintenance of and adherence to processes, policies and procedures for the sustainability of the organization's health outreach programs.

From 2003 to 2011, I served as a member of the US Army Reserves as a Healthcare Specialist and Combat Medic. After receiving specialized military training in basic EMT duties, ATLS, BTLS, ITLS, and Advanced/Pediatric Life Support, and graduating amongst the top 20% of my class, I served on several bases across the U.S. where I medically assessed soldiers mobilizing or demobilizing from overseas assignments (specifically coordinating a TB testing and Anthrax vaccination program at Fort Bliss’s Soldier Readiness Processing Center in El Paso, Texas). I additionally served as an instructor and routinely facilitated coursework on topics to include an Emergency Medical Technicians Refresher Course, a Combat Lifesaving Course, a course on Labor/Post-Partum and Infant care, and a course designed to demonstrate the proper technique and handling of live vaccines. I was honorably discharged from the US Army Reserves in April of 2011.
