In October of 2015, I was offered a position as a Infection Control Practitioner for the Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Medical Center based in Richmond, Virginia. As a key contributor for one of the leading facilities in one of the nation’s largest hospital systems. I was charged in reviewing cases on-site; researching affected patient’s medical condition, health status, and point of origination; and surveying both MRSA specimens and influenza antiviral and PCV13 vaccine effectiveness. I additionally researched hospital demographics, diagnosis codes, and treatment decisions to prevent further infection within the community. Most notably, I was trusted to make recommendations to senior staff and the CDC related to process innovations; suggesting and implementing changes related to the collection of alternate variables impacting programs to include the 2014/2015 Influenza Database.

In this role, I was charged in assisting the team leader with the Healthcare Associated Infection and Antimicrobial Use Prevalence Survey which was being conducted at 16 hospitals in the State of Colorado. Over the course of this assignment, I identified patients requiring additional medical record review by determining healthcare associated infection (HAI) status and case eligibility for inclusion in the prevalence survey. I also obtained and reviewed medical records to make HAI determinations, collected antimicrobial use data to include data used in evaluating the quality of antimicrobial drug prescribing, and submitted survey data into a web-based electronic data management system developed by the CDC.

I additionally served as an instructor and routinely facilitated coursework on topics to include an Emergency Medical Technicians Refresher Course, a Combat Lifesaving Course, a course on Labor/Post-Partum and Infant care, and a course designed to demonstrate the proper technique and handling of live vaccines. I was honorably discharged from the US Army Reserves in April of 2011.
