Immigration Process Analyst
R-Programming Tutor And Consultant
Current09/2021 - Present: After transitioning to my service year at Refugee Resettlement (below), I scaled back tutoring and prioritized the professionals that rely on me to perform their work. Notably, this work focused on supporting long-term projects, commonly in global health research and business analytics. 08/2020 - 07/2021: During this period, my flexible schedule allowed me to work as a tutor and consultant for various individuals: doctors, journalists, middle and high school students, college and postgraduate students, educators, business analysts, researchers, and even a soil scientist. Using Wyzant’s online platform, I managed the lifecycle of each need and matched each client to an appropriate type of assistance: recurring 1:1 sessions, one-time sessions, asynchronous, etc. This work was split between Statistics and R Programming though, generally, it was more common for professionals to seek R Programming support. During this time of diverse work, I refined my ability to communicate methodology and results to accommodate the level (academic and interest) of the student. I have received 200+ reviews for this work and many highlight my passion, patience, and communication skills. All reviews are 5/5 stars. Here’s an example: “Tabitha is so patient and has a gift for being able to explain concepts in an understandable fashion. [T]here have been certain coding and statistical concepts that I have not understood for months after watching YouTube videos, attending classes, and reading so many textbooks, but after one session with Tabitha I finally understand.”
Americorps Vip Fellow - Refugee Resettlement
As an AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Fellow, I coordinated Jewish Family Service - Refugee Resettlement's volunteer program as well as several other in-house services. Under my supervision, the total number of volunteer hours doubled and often exceeded 500/month. I attribute this growth to building strong relationships, conducting needs assessments, and smoothing out communication barriers between clients and volunteers. I also revised the onboarding procedure to be more efficient, freeing up time for training and therefore increasing volunteer retention. I coordinated and supervised approximately 75 volunteers each month across fieldwork, in-office, and remote positions. Notable volunteer programs I implemented include: - A 5 class/week English program in response to the influx of Afghan parolees that has assisted more than 70 families (as of June 2022) - A new position, Resource Navigator, enabled volunteers to do common tasks that clients ask of their case managers, but case managers were too busy to prioritize. The most common tasks were enrolling in low-income internet programs, applying for CA ID cards, and building resumes.- Remote internships for graduate students from the University of San Diego’s School of Peace Studies- Volunteer appreciation events such as scavenger hunts, potlucks, and drop-in hoursI was also responsible for organizing volunteer data, revamping a newsletter system, and maintaining external relations with local university and service club partners.Outside of the volunteer management work, I co-managed the domestic Cultural Orientation program (an ORR-required course covering the basics of life in the US), which entailed ensuring culturally-responsive content, coordinating translation, communicating details to families, taking attendance, and case noting. During the 2021 crisis, my other responsibilities included running an in-house diaper bank, coordinating in-kind donations, and liaising with the local food bank.
College And Career Mentor
I worked closely with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teachers and counselors to provide students with well-resourced support during the college application process. I counseled students about navigating the road to college as a first-generation student, specifically including topics like financial aid, imposter syndrome, and working while in school. Different students required different types of support, but many common types were essay editing, applying for FAFSA, and choosing a major.Januray 2021 - June 2021 I took on additional responsibilities as an academic tutor to more holistically support students through the spring semester August 2021 - Present Transitioned services from a paid position to a volunteer position to continue working with students interested in the QuestBridge program.
Head Political Statistics Tutor
After being promoted to Head Tutor, I supervised two teams--R Programming and Introduction to Quantitative Social Science ("Pol-Stats")--while working closely with course staff to support students. My philosophy working with students was to prioritize their experience in tutoring by using analogies and anecdotes in explanations and aiming for laughs/smiles. I fostered a close tutoring team, especially during the 2018-2019 school year, despite challenges with scheduling, course changes, and general administrative changes in the tutoring center.
Teaching Assistant
I worked with Introduction to Data Science students in their assigned precepts (small-group sections) as they grappled with the challenging content. The course had no prerequisites in order to make it accessible, so each student required an individual approach tailored to their experience level.
Front Desk Receptionist - First College Office
Worked part-time at the front desk of the college office to assist students looking for support.
Pre-Law Intern: Research Assistant
I advised the Center for Public Interest Law's legal team on existing data about migrants, especially in regards to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) and families separated by the Trump Administration's 'Zero-Tolerance Policy.' During this internship, I also performed preliminary research on how Artificial Intelligence will likely impact the legal field in years to come.
Advanced Yoga Teacher Training
Four weeks over two summers focused on advanced asana sequencing, Zen Thai massage, and yoga philosophy. http://www.liquidflowyoga.com/
Intern Coordinator
I returned to Come on Out - Japan as an Intern Coordinator and Mentor. In addition to teaching my own students, I facilitated my team's travel in Japan, provided holistic support to interns, and provided feedback that helped them develop as global educators. My team traveled to satellite schools in Yokohama and Fukuoka in addition to the primary location in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
Teaching Intern
I interned in Tokyo working with preteen- to university-aged students on English fluency and conversational skills. We studied the pedagogy of language learning and applied methods centered on building confidence in small groups of students.
