In October 2021, I began researching for a PhD in Mathematics at Swansea University. My project is titled “ML-guided dynamical systems modelling of Sepsis”, and I am working under the primary supervision of Dr Noemi Picco. We aim to explore the turning point of when Sepsis becomes critical in the hope of designing early intervention strategies to avoid rapid escalation and the need for drastic action. We will do this through the use of mathematical modelling, as well as machine learning techniques.My PhD runs for four years and is funded through the AIMLAC CDT. For the first six months of my PhD, I will receive relevant training to support my PhD. Also, as part of the CDT I must undertake a 2-week and 6-month placement with a company.Following a selection process, I am currently on placement as a data scientist at ONS working in the macroeconomics team.Background:In September 2019 I graduated with a undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Swansea University with First Class Honors. Some modules that I undertook include:Computational Methods (with MATLAB)Game Theory and OptimizationProject - Zero-one LawsAfter completion of my undergraduate degree I then studied for an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. Some examples of the modules I took include:Software Workshop (JAVA)Databases (SQL)Evaluation Methods and Statistics (R)For my masters dissertation I explored "The Automatic Scoring of HER2 in Breast Cancer Tissues using Machine Learning Algorithms". Aspects of machine learning covered in this project include neural networks, clustering, tissue segmentation, as well as classification. After completion of this project, I am proud to have received a grade of 78% for my work. This result, combined with my module marks, resulted in my final awarded grade for my masters being a distinction.After graduating from my masters, I then worked in a temporary role as E-Learning support for Malvern Panalytical.
