About Taja Kramberger

I have spent two decades at universities in Slovenia (1989-2010). First as a student, then as a postgraduate young researcher, teaching assistant, researcher, and university teacher (with the highest student grades). I founded and edited a multilingual anthropological journal (Monitor ISH, renamed Monitor ZSA) for 10 years. As a president of a faculty-events team (made of teachers and students) for cultural and intellectual activities (Collegium artium, 2007-2009) I voluntarily directed and coordinated some 130 events (lectures, round-tables, theater performances, literary readings, exhibitions, concerts, etc.). I have many publications and have translated some visible historians, anthropologists, and sociologists in the Slovene language (P. Bourdieu, L. Wacquant, Lucette Valensi, I. Kershaw, M. de Certeau, Michelle Perrot etc.). As an activist for human and social rights, I have organized manifestations, petitions, and resistant cultural events (all outside any political affiliation, but with a strong faith in real democracy, social justice, and the pluralism of voices). As a poet, writer, and translator I have published some 25 books (poetry, theatre, kids' literature, essays, translations of other authors) and led literary projects. Initially (1995-2006), I was highly confirmed in Slovenia (numerous nominations in the final circle, some awards, and fellowships for "the topmost writers"), so nationally as internationally, translated, included into anthologies, and sent or invited to literary festivals around the world. But I somehow did not fit into the (Slovene) model either for local women poets or for the political regime flattering "intellectuals". I did not prostrate before the right individuals, mostly men, but also well-positioned and ideologically fit women. And I love(d) people instead of humiliating them. However, in 2010, after a brutal university purge at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska in Koper-Capodistria, I was overnight - together with my husband Braco Rotar, a renowned ex-Yugoslavian and Slovene intellectual and writer - discredited and de-confirmed in all fields of my activities. It was the time when the regime of Slovene democracy of deceit went into its full swing (2010-2020), and the persons, confirmed by the oppressive regime, took important positions in a pocket-State. After years of daily struggles without an exit, Braco and I decided to move to France completely (2016), where we continue with our life struggles, research, and writing. I'm simply proud to be "de-confirmed" in such a context.

In Slovenia, I was - for an intensive decade - a tireless animator of cultural and social life in Ljubljana (2000-2004) and Koper (2004-2010). In 2000, I co-directed (with Sabina Mihelj) a big public cultural manifestation with an accompanying international petition (some 2500 signatures, among them P. Bourdieu, Jacques Le Goff, Serge Moscovici etc.) against the corruption in Slovene social and human sciences and against clientelism in their budget distribution. Apart from being a leader of institutional cultural events (first at the ISH, then at the Faculty of Humanities in Koper-Capodistria) and president of Tropos association (2004-2007), I have organized or co-organized among many other events also two big international literary projects. The first was an international meeting of poets and translators "Linguaggi di-versi" in 2002 in Koper (an anthology from this workshop was published in 2004), and the second - was an EU "Culture 2000" supported literary project which connected 6 EU ports through writers in residences in 2006: Cardiff-Galway-Helsinki-Koper-Riga-Valletta.

I have edited some literary books and anthologies, published a few hundred other texts and articles (in journals, newspapers, websites), and translated a further ten literary books (and numerous journal entries) written by poets and writers into the Slovene language. I have some book translations of my own poetry in other languages (Spanish, German, Croatian, English, French, Italian). • Educational Research Institute
Scientific Collaborator With Phd (Senior Researcher)
Educational Research Institute Aug 2011 - Aug 2014
    Slovenia
I worked on a research project about anthropological aspects of non-formal and informal educational practices in the past and in the present. In these project frames, I conducted a double survey: a socio-anthropological qualitative inquiry (some 50 questionnaires) and an historical-anthropological investigation of narratives about informal learning in autobiographical texts of some Slovenian and other intellectuals and writers from the 19th and 20th centuries. My referential axis is composed of Bourdieuian studies, research of intellectuals by C. Charle, M. Winock, E. Traverso etc. H. Zinn and the pedagogy of resistance (Freire, Mc Laren, Flecha, Best, Claudia Corol...) were also helpful, as well as some other conceptual elaborations, as for example these by M. Halbwachs, P. Nora, G. Noiriel, M. de Certeau, and others. We produced two monographs in the project, the second was published in English: From Formal to Non-Formal: Education, Learning and Knowledge, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014 (available here: https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-4438-5910-3)
  • University Of Primorska, Faculty Of Humanities
Assistant And Teaching Assistant (Dozent) Of History And Historical Anthropology
University Of Primorska, Faculty Of Humanities Oct 2004 - Dec 2010
Drago Rotar and I have prepared and written the whole program of Historical Anthropology (from undergraduate to Ph.D. studies; 12 courses) for that institution. I was engaged for the institution day in and day out and had very high evaluations or highest grades from my students for all the years on the faculty. Between 2007 and 2009 I conducted cultural, artistic, and intellectual events at the faculty in the frames of Collegium artium together with other colleagues and students (more than 100 events were executed in a very vivid scene and local people started to appreciate the high spirit and an open intellectual atmosphere of round tables, conferences, literary events, theatre performances, exhibitions, manifestations, debates, film evenings, etc.) In 2010, in the frames of a sudden and brutal university purge of critical intellectuals in the name of the "financial debt" (made by those who purged us!) and "rationalization of the faculty personnel" I lost a job. Many students pleaded and spoke publicly against irrational dismissals, but to no result (see their pages against the purge here: http://resimouniverzo.blogspot.fr/). I put charges against the University of Primorska and in 2011 at the Court of Labour in Koper we - both sides - agreed upon the indemnity from the University of Primorska. But I had no future anymore in Slovenia, the spacy is tiny, the population smaller than 5 Paris districts, and there are only three universities, where the same personnel and ideas circulate.
  • University Of Primorska, Faculty Of Humanities
    President Of Collegium Artium
University Of Primorska, Faculty Of Humanities Jan 2007 - Sep 2009
    Koper-Capodistria, Slovenia
A unique (voluntary) formation - collegium - of students, assistants, and university teachers at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska in Koper-Capodistria, which lasted only 2 years. In that short period of time, we - those who were involved in the cultural animation of university space - managed to organize - around 130 events of different cultural, intellectual, and creative forces. It was a beautiful and singular experience, an outburst of a vivacious cultural and intellectual scene, shared by students, teachers, and local people, in a small and somewhat sleepy coastal town of Koper-Capodistria in Slovenia.
  • Ish (2001-2004), Tropos (2004-2007), Založba Annales (2007-2010)
Editor-In-Chief Of Monitor Zsa – Journal For Historical, Social And Other Anthropologies
    Ish (2001-2004), Tropos (2004-2007), Založba Annales (2007-2010) Jan 2001 - Dec 2010
    Ljubljana, Slovenia And Koper-Capodistria, Slovenia
In 2001, I founded and conceived a multilingual anthropological journal Monitor ISH, in 2004 (during the putsch at the ISH, when regime-liked personnel took over the institution, i.e. ISH-Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis) renamed to Monitor ZSA. In ten years (2001-2010), I edited 38 numbers of the journal. Mostly it was volunteer work (with an exception of around 1000 euros of royalties in 10 years). In a viscerally anti-intellectual milieu, I considered the journal an important debating institution. It was quite different from other journals in Slovenia already by its conception (many translations, open debates, interviews with interesting individuals, the coexistence of science and literature, etc.): I did not want to develop it into a egotistic competitive points-scraping platform for striving individuals or international indexes. I wanted it to be a small, but open and intellectually intensive circle of various hot debates, a stimulation for students (who wrote critical reviews and follow other journals), and also a "locus" of a survey of our academic social life. After the academic purge in 2010 at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska (when I was unlawfully dismissed from my university post), Monitor ZSA has finally stopped being published. Last four numbers in two big volumes (around 900 pages) were in a way, paradoxically, just the culmination of our (editorial board) decade efforts. They were a compilation of crucial texts - our own and the translated ones - in Slovene language, destined for the students of historical and social anthropology at the university in Koper. They can be seen in the connection below. These two final volumes were co-edited by Ana Tominc.
  • Tropos-Association Of Historical, Social And Other Anthropologies And Cultural Activities
    President Of The Association Tropos
Tropos-Association Of Historical, Social And Other Anthropologies And Cultural Activities Mar 2004 - Mar 2007
    Ljubljana
For three years (2004-2007) TROPOS was a publisher of the journal Monitor ZSA. In the frames of the association we organized different activities, for example, an international workshop of poets and translators from 12 countries, and finally published its anthology: "Linguaggi-di versi" (Libris, 2004). We also published other texts: poetry books, selected texts of Pierre Bourdieu and Loic Wacquant, organized national and international cultural events and conferences.
  • Ministry Of Culture
    Professional Writer
    Ministry Of Culture 2003 - 2007
    Slovenia
Basically, I wrote fiction, essays, and poetry. In these three years, I published 5 books and translated foreign writers and poets into the Slovene language. At the same time, I founded an association for intellectual and cultural activities named TROPOS and organized national and international events. In 2006, I directed the EU-founded international project SEALINES for Slovenia, which connected 6 European port cities with a chain of Writers in Residence.
