About Tajwar Shelim

I’m Taj - Called to the Bar of England and Wales, specialising in migration, human rights and global justice. I work collaboratively with organisations and individuals to pursue meaningful social change through campaigning, advocacy and project management. My mission is to bring people and ideas together to achieve worthwhile and lasting outcomes for us all. I am the Campaign Organiser for Migrant Voice, where we challenge hostile migration policy and rhetoric, both in politics and the media, and shed light on the stories of hope behind the headlines. Research, analysis and collaboration form the backbone of my work, contributing to 30+ legal submissions, representing 50+ clients and managing 20+ projects with various Councils, Charities and the NHS. I am also an award-winning businessman and restaurateur having won the Catering Circles Star Show in Season 7. My mission is to help usher real systemic change across the United Kingdom, campaigning for justice and social change, and how we think about delivering services, both in the legal and public sectors alongside the restaurant industry. I utilise a range of online project management tools enhanced through practical methodology and a focused application of adaptive & systems leadership, working in complexity, conflict resolution and mediation to achieve this. My work is shaped by the belief that collective action and communication allow us to achieve mutually aligned aims, and in time, reshape those ends to reflect our shared values, building us towards a more equitable, kind and just world. With that in mind, I ensure all my work is seen through an inclusive, adaptive and accessible lens to ensure everyone finds the role they want to play. I have previously been a project manager and consultant for Collaborate, supporting the delivery of over 25 projects including Barnet Council on their new Corporate Strategy & Transformation Plan, the London Borough of Hounslow with their SEND Team and the Ministry of Justice’s prison leavers initiative. I have also represented over 50 refugees in the United Kingdom and Spain, alongside drafting written submissions to local Courts, the ICC and the United Nations. I am currently a Trustee for Refugee Cafe in Lewisham, alongside supporting Aspiring Barristers Ltd. and The LADS Project. If you want to hear more about my story, you can find it on my personal website, and if you would like to connect please do get in touch, and together, let’s change the world.

I hosted multiple workshops across the country. It was a fulfilling experience getting to share my insight with those whose position I was in only a few years ago. Given my own unorthodox career path, I hoped that I could provide reassurance and advice to those who were not sure if a career in Law was for them. The LNAT course itself is an additional hurdle, in an already competitive field, the teaching I provided at the workshops gave the students the best possible chance of securing places at their desired Universities. Most students I tutored have told me they have received offers from the Schools of their choice. Show less

The stress of being a student with deadlines, coursework, society commitments and more can lead to a very stressful time.As a course representative, my role was to act as both a peer and a connection with students and staff. If students had issues emotionally or needed someone to talk to I would be there with advice or just to listen. If a student had fallen behind on their classwork or had a problem with revision or coursework I would act as the link between them (the student body) and the staff overseeing the module. The role played a pivotal part in my growth and development at university. Not only did it keep me ahead of all the proceedings within my department, on a personal level it created many friendships and bonds with students and faculty alike. Show less
