Welcome to the Takiaho Movement, a kaupapa led by Lee Timutimu that seeks to highlight the lack of digital equity for Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand.Taki-aho:Takiaho means-A series or succession of ancestors or descendants of a given person, a line of descent. The prefix ‘taki’ means ‘in a group of’ and ‘aho’ means a connection in both a figurative and literal sense. Traditionally, aho was used for fishing line, cord, string or cross-threads of weaving or a mat. And, figuratively, a medium for an atua in divination. In recent times, aho is used to describe a digital connection or network e.g. ahokore – Wi-Fi.Nā Ariana Stone (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa) ēnei kōrero.WHY TAKIAHO?I believe TAKIAHO aptly describes the purpose of this movement because it represents a group of followers connected by whakapapa Māori, and importantly it makes reference to the digital realm.TAKIAHO was also the name of the Māori and Pasifika led consortium that I was a part of and that lost out to the MBIE Domestic Tech Story RFP in 2023.
