I moved back to Uppsala to work on the population genomics of painted lady butterflies. These butterflies also display a phenomenal seasonal migration from Africa to Scandinavia. I am trying understand the genomic basis of this migration.I am also helping Dr. Niclas Backström and Dr. Jacob Höglund in their efforts to inform the local governments regarding the conservation of the clouded apollo butterfly. We are using whole genome sequencing and population re-sequencing of these butterflies to understand its genetic diversity and inbreeding.

During my first post-doc i worked with monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in Jaap De Roode’s lab at Emory University to identify regions or genes responsible for selection and local adaptations. North American monarch butterflies make a long migration every year from Canada and northern USA to Mexico on the eastern coast and to California on the western coast. The longstanding belief is that eastern and western monarchs are two different populations, but genetic differentiation studies using microsatellites show that they are an interbreeding population. We used population-resequencing data of 14 monarchs sampled on the eastern coast of USA and 29 monarchs sampled in the western coast to identify the genetic structure between these two populations. We found out that eastern and westen monarchs hybridize more often than previously thought and they are one panmictic population. These results were published recently in Molecular Ecology and gained some media attention (Talla, et al., 2020).
