Tamar Todd Email and Phone Number
Growing up in a large Israeli family, I was raised in a culture that centered around the importance of family and community. Shabbat dinners (and dinner for most other days of the week) were mandatory and always involved over a dozen people, anyone and everyone is always welcome and will be met with a full plate of food, and family and friends are the best path to happy life. Ultimately, your days should be filled with good food and good people. When I left for college, there was certainly an adjustment period as I was separated from my community for the first time. However, I learned first-hand how to cultivate that community and family for myself. The people and exact traditions changed, but the ultimate goal was the same: good food and good people. Being raised in this manner has had a profound impact on all aspects of my life, from the field I study, to my love of cooking, to my dreams of travelling. When I began to form an affinity for engineering, my interests were always met with a captive audience who was ready to support, and question, anything I wanted to discuss. I was pushed to pursue my passions, to make smart decisions, and to keep in mind the goal of community and warmth. While engineering may not be the first area of study that comes to mind when discussing “warmth” and “community,” I’ve taken these values and translated them into my studies and academic goals. I believe that engineering is a vital tool to create a better world, such as with my involvement in more direct projects as the co-lead of Engineers Without Borders Yumbe team. Even for other projects, such as head of integration with the university’s CubeSAT creation, an emphasis of warmth and kindness goes lengths when working with others. Good food and good people is a mantra to live by, and my academic and personal goals are no exceptions (though there is a little less food in engineering than I would like). I love to meet new people and expand my growing community of friends, and I am fascinating with the expanding world of science and engineering.
