Safewards is an evidence based model of care (Len Bowers UK) designed to decrease conflict and containment events. The model recognizes that conflict and containment are in a dynamic reciprocal relationship. Meaning that at times, the use of containment strategies can cause conflict events and other times, conflict events can cause the use of containment strategies. The Model has us look at six originating factors; staff team, physical environment, outside the hospital, patient community, patient characteristics and the necessary regulatory framework. When we look at these factors we can see they give risk to “flashpoints” that can trigger conflict and containment. Research shows that staff intervention can prevent a flashpoint from arising, prevent conflict and eliminate the need for containment, promoting the safety of patients and staff. Show less

I introduced photoVOICE methodology to the NBRHC as a means of capturing the patient voice, sharing their story, educating the community about mental Health Recovery and fighting stigma. During this time I received training from the UK and developed a video "How TO" facilitators Guide to photoVOICE Facilitation and a photoVOICE Participant Workbook that has been shared Internationally.

As a Patient and Family Partnered Care Coordinator it was my role to ensure the voice of the patient and family was sought and heard at all levels of the organization. During this role I researched best practices in patient and family centered care and developed NBRHC Roadmap to Patient Partnered Care. I also completed my Lean Green Belt in designing a program to include patient and family voice in all quality improvements across the organization.
