Overseeing all campaign, communications, mobilisation and engagement work for Greenpeace in Japan. Our primary areas of work are on catalysing an energy revolution in Japan, on oceans conservation and sparking an uptake in sustainable seafood, and on promoting Food for Life across the country.

I oversaw all of the oceans conservation work for Greenpeace globally, conducted by the campaigners at Greenpeace International, and via our national office teams. This role included line managing 12 direct reports, administering a budget of ~ 2-million euros, and serving on the international coordinating body for all programmes run by GPI. Much of this was during a period of internal restructuring, so along with the regular responsibilities of the position, I along with my colleagues became increasingly skilled at change management.

I was responsible for overseeing the development of our campaign communications strategies and creative products which, given the skills and strengths of my colleagues, makes it a great deal easier than it might be!

Beijing

I was brought in to build a team of strong mainland Chinese campaigners to support our international forests work. China is now the second largest manufacturing nation in the world, importing a great deal of timber from south-east Asian countries and Russia, where much of the logging can be illegal. Our job was to challenge that, which we did successfully by launching the ground-breaking report Sharing the Blame, revealing China's role in forest destruction. Using this as a basis for corporate outreach, we then were able to get multiple DIY chains to adopt positive procurement policies that excluded the use of illegal and endangered timber.

Vancouver, Canada

I was given the amazing opportunity to coordinate our work to protect the largest intact area of temperate rainforest on the planet - the Great Bear Rainforest - which was ultimately successful. And whilst I was in Canada, we also launched our work to get large swathes of the boreal forest protected - which is a work-in-progress, but making significant headway.I also served on the drafting committee that wrote the most stringent Forest Stewardship Council standard ever approved, alongside a multi-stakeholder group that included representatives from business, communities, First Nations and civil society.
