Volunteer Project - In Collaboration With Griffith University And The Environmental Futures Centre
I initiated this project as part of the study being conducted by the Queensland Herbarium (formerly Department of Environment and Resource Management) on the environmental impacts of usage of the Horse-Trail Network throughout south east Queensland. I commenced the study: "Vehicles as vectors of weed dispersal in protected areas of south east Queensland" as a part of my university undergraduate degree, and recieved funding from the Environmental Futures Centre to continue the study through the summer semester of 2011/2012. The project has involved the collection of soil samples from State Government research and National Parks maintenance vehicles and the completion of germination trials of the samples to assess the potential of Government vehcicles to act as vectors of weed seed.
Industry Placement - Research Assistant
As part of the Griffith University Work Integrated Learning program (Industrial Affiliates Program), I completed the research project: "Structural and floristic changes in semi-evergreen vine thicket over 50 years, at the Brigalow Research Station, central Queensland".The study was conducted from January to June 2011 and included vegetation surveys in central Queensland with Dr Bill McDonald (Principal Botanist - Qld Herbarium). Results of the 2011 survey were compared with surveys conducted in the 1960's and 1990's and statistical analysis performed to determine the significance of changes over time, along with a review of comtemporary literature on seasonally dry tropical forests.I continued this study on a voluntary basis from July to November 2011, and presented the results on behalf of Dr Bill McDonald at the Ecological Society of Australia annual conference in Hobart November 2011.
