Coffee. Lights. Action.The way in which Lego pieces fit together perfectly is the manner in which I connect with the performing arts as I have discovered a profound love for anything capable of demonstrating human emotion be it dance, voice inflections, or the poetic writing of piercing words. However, where I feel most at home is on the stage under the warm blinding lights, singing to my heart's content, baring my vulnerable soul to create a moment of immense feeling, be it positive or otherwise, for at least one person in the audience. Nevertheless, you will most likely find me functioning solely on my good ol' cup of coffee and some prayers in order to start my day and do all of that marvelous stuff.However, I also find myself yearning for the knowledge of language and culture, behavioral and cognitive science, and English literature. Language and culture has always been an ever present value in my life as I grew up a bilingual first-generation Mexican-American. From a young age, I had to navigate translation between English and Spanish as I encountered situations where people did not know both. Every time I am able to break the barrier of language and see people's faces light up, my own heart glows as I know that they will no longer remain in a place of confusion and frustration as the act of listening and understanding can finally take place. Moreover, we really should be seeking to appreciate the abundance of variation in our world because together we can go bigger and bolder in anything. Ambition seems to overtake me because I love learning about most anything in life. In short, I want to be a 'jack of all trades'; you never know what unique skill I have under my belt. My ultimate purpose in this life is to serve: to help or guide people in any and every way I can be it holding the door, singing a song, teaching a 1st grader how to read, or making lunch for refugees. Sometimes we just have to be willing, even if we don't feel qualified.
