We began from the need to create public awareness and pressure to attempt to save the 87 raccoons violently seized by the MNRF. Upon gathering information and eye-witness accounts of this incident, as well as numerous other accounts from Wildlife Rehabilitators across the province, Raccoon Freedom Fighters stepped up to become the voice for our wildlife and Wildlife Rehabilitators in Ontario.Our primary goal is to bust the myth that the MNRF is protecting our wildlife. This agency licenses and promotes trapping, hunting, and the cruelest of all bloodsports - penned dog hunting. The MNRF states that they "manage" our wildlife in order to "protect" economical opportunities and outdoor recreation activities. In other words, they protect the resource of flesh and fur for their hunters.This agency is ineffectively in the position of regulating our Wildlife Rehabilitators. How can the same agency that promotes and licenses killing of wildlife for fun also be governing the people who have dedicated their lives to saving these same animals? This is a conflict of interest, and a clash of ideologies and values.Our wildlife need and deserve real protection - protection from the agency the public falsely believes is protecting them. Raccoon Freedom Fighters, along with animal rights lawyers and leaders in animal advocacy, is pressuring for legislative change that will protect the interest of our wildlife. We are also pressing for a new branch of Wildlife Protection in the MNRF which can effectively regulate our Wildlife Rehabilitators.Raccoon Freedom Fighters focuses on building social media presence, public outreach at co-aligning events, guest-speaking at public events, and forming supportive alliances.
