I created continuing taxation education courses to help bright professionals increase their knowledge base in easy and practical ways.

As a J.D./LL.M. Taxation student, I worked 20 hours each week teaching other law students how to achieve legal success. I taught them how to apply logic, critical thinking, and legal analysis to their substantive classes. Time management and attention to the development of legal writing were central to my instruction.

In this position, I researched and drafted memoranda related to Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases, specifically tax issues. I observed and participated in each stage of the case proceeding: entering information from e-filing into the trustee system, analyzing the numbers, attending plan hearings and confirmations, and assisting with the case file.

My primary responsibility was researching the law regarding governmental immunity and sewage systems. My research allowed the City to serve the citizens of Grand Rapids in the most effective way. During my time with the City, I observed first-hand the continuous struggle to balance municipality and citizen interests.

My time with the Fair Housing office was personally and professionally rewarding. Using the knowledge I acquired, I realized that I had personally suffered a valid housing discrimination case. Three years after initiating the investigation there was a resolution to the case, and it was the largest settlement achieved by this fair housing branch.

My role with LRG led me to pursue my law degree. I negotiated and finalized licensing contracts between LRG’s university clients and the licensing suppliers of collegiate merchandise. I worked directly with in-house counsel, drafting contract provisions and licensing agreements. LRG valued and utilized my teaching skills to strengthen and create client relationships. I utilized my problem-solving skills to increase internal office efficiency and decrease expenditures.

After twelve years of competitive figure skating, I had the rare opportunity to develop a skating program for the first ice rink in Ottawa County. Collaboration with community businesses and cross-branding endeavors allowed me to create a thriving skating program in under two years. I increased the hourly rental profit by 388%, managed a staff of eight, and worked with over 400 families.
