I teach in the M.F.A. program at Antioch University. I began teaching at Antioch in 2007, took several semesters off, and resumed teaching in 2009.

I am the author of several Atria Books titles, including Blood Colony, The Living Blood, Joplin's Ghost and The Good House. I am the co-author of Atria's Tennyson Hardwick series, co-authored with Steven Barnes and presented by Blair Underwood.

I write screenplays and collaborate on screenplays and teleplays with my husband, Steven Barnes. We sold three drafts of our adaptation of my novel The Good House to Fox Searchlight, working with Forest Whitaker, Blair Underwood and Nia Hill and D'Angela Steed of Strange Fruit Films. I am a member of the Writers Guild of America (West)

I am the author of HarperCollins titles The Between and My Soul to Keep.

I taught a "Life of the Writer" style course, incorporating both English literature and creative writing.
