About Tanel Kärp
Designing digital experiences for nearly 25 years. I designed and developed my first interface at 13 and have been proactively involved in the field ever since. Learning-by-making, my fascination in humans, psychology, art, architecture and technology led me to two academic degrees in design and iterated into a profession of an interaction designer. Driven by the First Things First manifesto (1964), I see Design as a powerful attitude that can help lead our lives as individuals, teams, companies or even as a society. Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly lucky to be surrounded by visionaries who have allowed me to realise this mindset in provoking positive educational, social and environmental change. Today I've moved from pixels to people and strive to combine my analytical mindset, design thinking and leadership know-how with creative skills, to help entrepreneurs and teams develop meaningful, sustainable and human-friendly products, services and processes. Mostly engaged in the Academia, development programs and handful of startups, but also open for project-based consulting and collaboration opportunities. I'm currently intrigued by applying design psychology, strategy and facilitation to help along transformation in complex environments.

CurrentI'm helping to run and mentor the Interaction Design master's curriculum. In addition to developing the program, managing the stakeholders and numerous industry collaborations, and coaching students, I'm involved in mentoring subject such as Design for Social Innovation, Emotional Design, Nudging for Sustainability, graduate projects, and others. In addition to EKA, I've taught courses in Latvia, Germany, France and Japan.I've helped to establish the Digital Product Design BA and Service Design Strategies and Innovations MA programs, several Open Academy courses and am using design methods to help facilitate EKA's complex in-house developments, such as sustainable transformation, improving internal communications, workflows, etc.
