About Tania Paola Lopez Cantu, Ph.D.

I am interested in climate change, urban development, data analytics, and sustainability. For my Ph.D., I have focused on infrastructure adaptation and resilience to climate change. Specifically, I have worked on characterizing observed and future changes in rainfall patterns. I have studied future changes using global climate models (GCM) projections and the associated uncertainties. I also have experience in infrastructure climate resIlience using future climate projections. Currently, I am a Product Engineer at Esri, where I use my expertise in hydrology, land surface, engineering, and GIS to test, develop and apply ArcGIS Spatial Analyst tools to tackle sustainability and climate resilience challenges.

I worked under the supervision of Dr. Andreas F. Prein at the Capacity Center for Climate and Weather Extremes. My research project involved designing a framework for comparing several publicly available climate projections datasets for the continental United States. I characterized differences in daily future rainfall extremes across these datasets and showed that climate resilience strategies can vary depending on the input dataset. I also quantified the additional uncertainty from dataset differences and compared its contribution to other sources of uncertainty including future emissions scenarios and statistical model uncertainty. I published an open-source research paper in Geophysical Research Letters which summarizes the findings along with a dataset of percent changes in future rainfall volumes from each climate projection dataset to encourage further investigation in robust strategies to adapt to potential future changes.
