About Tanja L. Masson-Zwaan 🟥

I am Asst. Professor / Deputy Director of the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden University (IIASL), Vice President for Science and Academic Relations of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and President Emerita of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL). I am a global Faculty member of International Space University (ISU).I advise the Dutch government on the implementation of the Dutch Space Activities Act, teach and supervise students at Bachelors, Masters and PhD level, and carry out research and publish on a broad range of space law topics. In 2019 I co-authored the 4th edition of 'Introduction to Space Law' (Kluwer).I lecture at universities worldwide, set up courses in air and space law at the National University of Singapore, and worked as a consultant for a space insurance broker in France and in my own company in The Netherlands.I currently serve as advisor to or on the board of various organisations, such as Open Lunar Foundation, ASU Interplanetary Initiative, UARX Space, Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and China Institute of Space Law (CISL), and am a member of the Board of Editors of Air and Space Law (Kluwer). Previously I was board member of the Stichting Space Professionals Foundation (SSPF), member of the Advisory Committee of Secure World Foundation (SWF) and member of the Founding Boards of Women in Aerospace-Europe and of the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL). I am an elected member of he International Academy of Astronautics, the Académie de l’Air et de l’Espace, and the International Law Association. The Dutch Government appointed me as arbitrator for space related disputes at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and as member of the Space Learning Group of ICAO. I co-founded The Hague International Space Resources Governance Working Group.I received the Distinguished Service Award of the IISL (2001), the Social Sciences Award of the International Academy of Astronautics, IAA (2008) and the IAF Distinguished Service Award (2015). In 2018 I became the first female member of honour of the Netherlands Space Society, where I previously served as  Vice Chairperson. I received a Royal decoration for my work in space law as Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau in 2020.
