Engineering Intern
I worked as an intern at the Bentley systems Inc. working on the SACS project. My internship project entails the connection of two of Bentley systems software's that is AutoPIPE and SACS. Currently in the industry piping and structural work is done separately, usually by 2 teams that have different softwares to work on and have to transfer the piping stress results to the primary structure manually. With this interoperability between the 2 softwares the hundreds of man-hours wasted in this intensive process can be avoided completely. The different steps of my job here are1)Designing AUTOpipe models of piping and related secondary steel according to existing standards. The piping models were made for actual off-shore oil fields that exist. These models were developed after referring directly to clients of SACS and the target customers.2) After the AUTOpipe models were developed, the Primary skid was developed in SACS to envelope the piping model. The model had to take into considerations all the loads that would be generated due to the piping.3)The primary skid model was made on STAAD and very simple analysis sets were run on both models to check for any deflections that did not match for validation.4)The AUTOpipe models were analysed for pressure and temperature conditions faced by pipings used in off-shore oilfields and the resultant stresses on the secondary steel were imported into SACS. The supports were considered rigid.5) Once the results of the AUTOpipe models were successfully imported and connected into the SACS model the analysis was run in SACS for weather conditions faced by off-shore structures. These results were exported into AUTOpipe.6)The deflections of the primary structure were imported into AUTOpipe and the last set of Analysis was run. These steps greatly reduced the number of man hours reduced in this redundant procedure and gives a much better result than manual entering results, which only does the pipe analysis once.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
• Participate in discussions with clients to understand their needs and make drawings in AutoCAD and CATIA.• Assist in making cost estimates for the products and write a quote for the project.• Aid in communication with vendors to learn of availability of raw material and bargain a price.• Make CAD models for shop floor workers for easy understanding and hence speed up production.• Understand and solve fabrication related issues in real time on the shop floor.• Coordinate and assist in sending product to the galvanizing or PVC coating plants and finally to the client.
Maintanence Intern
The aim of the internship was to prepare a list of all routine maintenance and break downs that occurred during the period of the internship and to make a report of each one. Also a report was made that gave possible changes to the previous maintenance routines that could increase the life-time of the machines. The Plant was a foundry, so there was exposure to Synchronous motors, Over-head cranes, Sand mixing equipment and AC furnaces.
