About Tanner Coe
My name is Tanner Coe and I am an aspiring educator and dedicated disability rights advocate. My spirit for advancing the public good began at a young age and prior to UCLA, I immersed myself in multiple community leadership and advocacy roles impacting various local systems. These experiences introduced me to disability rights and instilled in me an insatiable thirst for social justice. Attaining lived experience as a closeted, gay, non-binary youth living in a notoriously conservative area of San Diego, I understand firsthand that the intersectional complexities of life impact student outcomes in ways we cannot fully understand. When I began at UCLA, I knew I wanted to affect change. Upon taking Disability Studies 101, the social model of disability deeply altered my worldview. My college pursuits fittingly reflect a deep commitment to the advancement of disability rights. Learning about a range of disability topics, I gained simultaneous lived experience in psychiatric institutions after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I also developed the confidence to live unapologetically as myself without regard to societal sexual and gender norms and underwent weight loss of over 100 pounds. In the world of advocacy and education, I highlight these lived experiences as invaluable to strengthening my empathy and compassion within these spaces. At my school capstone placement, I realized the power of education to advance my principles. My students discussed stigmatized disability topics with ease, despite my research showing profound curriculum gaps compared to other identities. Upon graduating UCLA, I began working as a full-time substitute and am ascertaining experience across a variety of ages, subjects, and schools. I strive to benefit stakeholders to the best of my ability in short-term placements with an effective intersectional philosophy to teaching. I am also in a disability law fellowship, which allows me to formally learn disability law and network with like-minded advocates. As I explore possible credential pathways, I intend to sustain my involvement as a disability rights advocate and meld these principles with my pedagogy. I am currently open to opportunities within the spaces of education, disability rights, and related fields. I am passionate about ensuring that every student, regardless of background or ability, has an equal chance at utilizing the power of education to attain their goals. I hope that you will join me as I strive to create a world of opportunity and access that we can all be proud of. Thank you for visiting my profile.
