Research Mentor: Prof. Clark Landis Tools for Olefin Polymerization• Developed and designed a stop-flow device which can be used to obtain kinetic information for olefin polymerization reactions.• Constructed the Wisconsin-Quench Kinetics (WiQK) Reactor capable of studying fast chemical reactions (~20 milliseconds), at a variety of temperatures (up to 200 °C) and pressures (up to 500 psi).• Successfully demonstrated that the WiQK-reactor can be used, in combination with a chromophore quench labeling strategy, to obtain active site counts at fast reaction times (1.2 seconds)• Collaborated with Dow Chemical to gain mechanistic insight into industrially relevant olefin polymerization catalyst.• Conducted a thorough mechanistic investigation into a hafnium imino-amido olefin polymerization catalyst.• Discovered a novel mechanism, which had been previously unknown to our collaborators, on a catalyst that had been studied for over a decade.

Research Advisor: Prof. Aaron L. Odom Catalysis using Earth Abundant Metals• Invented titanium-based catalysts for atom economical reactions into nitrogen-based products.• Synthesized over 20 titanium catalysts, with a variety of steric and electronic properties, to study their reactivity.• Constructed a model to predict reaction rates based off of catalyst design, resulting in our groups first Nature Chemistry publication and aided in the renewal a $400,000 NSF grant.• Collaborated with Dr. Jetze Tepe, at MSU, to develop biologically active nitrogen-based heterocycles, via titanium catalysis.• Implemented a titanium-catalyzed multicomponent coupling reaction to synthesize 36 quinoline-based compounds, in a one-pot two step procedure.• Successfully developed a novel class of low micromolar, quinoline-based, proteasome inhibitors.• Contributed to the development of a database for all the natural product total syntheses in 2011, under the guidance of Dr. William Wulff.• Effectively cataloged over 2500 chemical transformations, in over 200 natural product total syntheses, to aid scientists in chemical syntheses.

• Coordinated with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to ensure health and safety regulations were met.• Developed and implemented standard operating procedures (SOPs) in lab that were in accordance with EHS standards.• Recognized as the safest lab in the MSU chemistry department (6 years running) and our lab was featured in an EHS lab safety video!

• Platoon Leader in the 457th Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Company.• Coordinated with company leadership to develop response plans and training exercises to ensure that the 457th CBRN Company was prepared to protect the United States in case of a CBRN event.• Led 25 soldiers in CBRN defense tasks to guarantee all soldiers were physically and mentally mission ready.• Successfully trained soldiers to perform CBRN defense actions. This contributed to the 457th CBRN company becoming the fastest CBRN response company in the nation, having a total setup time of 41 minutes (beating the previous record of 1 hour and 16 minutes)!

Research Advisor: Dr. Thomas Nalli• Collaborated with the US Geological Survey to identify fatty acids in lipid extracts from the Mississippi River, using mass spectrometry.• Successfully determined optimum GC-MS parameters to identify, and separate, over 50 fatty acid derivatives in a single experiment. This method was adapted by the US Geological Survey which allowed them to rapidly access over 20 biota samples in a single day.
