Tanner currently serves as a math teacher for Cave Spring and Hidden Valley High School.

Tanner served as a teacher for the Asbury Family Resource Center, home of the Washington County Alternative School (MS/HS), Optional High School, and Tennessee Virtual Learning Academy.

Tanner served as the head club coach, head youth coach, and high school assistant coach for the Science Hill Hilltopper Wrestling Program.

Tanner has experience teaching a variety of classes including Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Discrete Math, an ACT Prep. Additional activities included leadership in a summer robotics camp where students learned to build and program machines to complete various tasks, an outdoors club in which students learned about outdoor recreation and caring for their environment, and an academic achievement class engaging students in college and career prep, personal finance, and career technical skills. In 2020, the senior class dedicated the yearbook to Tanner as a token of their appreciation. In addition to teaching, Tanner served as the cross country head coach for middle school and high school athletes. During his time, he increased numbers to have the largest team in school history, coaching a state champion and multiple state placers.

Tanner served as the head coach for Hoover club wrestling. He continued to coach and mentor athletes from across the Birmingham area. Aside from coaching, responsibilities included managing tournaments and fundraising events and marketing the club.

In 2016, Tanner founded the nonprofit organization Gravity Wrestling Academy in Birmingham, AL. During this time, he was named the Alabama Youth Wrestling State Coach of the Year. He also served on the USA Wrestling board as the Alabama Youth Director, for which he managed tournaments and helped areas across the state start youth wrestling clubs.

HTSI is an environmental and geosciences consulting firm anticipating, identifying and addressing a wide range of concerns for clients across the United States. Tanner served as a staff engineer contributing in field work and report writing.

After graduating from AU, Tanner joined the staff at BECC, Inc. providing civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineering support for various projects throughout the southeast United States. BECC's clients consist of various construction companies and contractors as well as state departments.

Tanner joined the staff of Alabama Wrestling Club in December 2015 after finding much joy in mentoring youth with the help of the sport of wrestling. While serving as an assistant coach, Tanner also served as the Greco-Roman head coach for the national team, yielding several All-Americans and aiding in several wrestlers' dreams towards competing at the Division I level. What parents find the most appealing are the attributes that Tanner aims to instill in his students. The mentoring side of coaching and the relationships Tanner has made throughout the process bring the most enjoyment, and are a large part of why he has chosen to continue coaching while continuing his future in engineering.
