About Andrew Tanner-Smith

As a procurement process expert, I have spent my career solving system problems in large complex organisations such as Nokia and Convatec. Working relentlessly to build efficient, more cost-effective processes more closely aligned with strategy and vision.I have coordinated the delivery of large national programmes to overhaul comms infrastructure, revitalised failing projects and designed multiple process frameworks to save millions of pounds and thousands of hours of FTE. My work draws on the skills I have gathered in my training, with Prince2, Lean6Sigma and SCOR providing the backdrop to the value I bring. While optimal process building is, in large part, a science, there is an art to it too. Understanding the requirements of humans at the heart of organisations — what they need and why — is a crucial prerequisite. It is this approach that has helped me deliver what customers need, train and guide team members, and bring success to large complex projects that drive the organisation forward in the fulfilment of major projects and programmes.I am always happy to hear about opportunities that may be of interest to me.

  • Nokia
    Project Office Manager
    Nokia Sep 2018 - Dec 2019
    Reading, United Kingdom
Following a restructuring, I moved into a Project Office Management position to recover a failing project that was behind schedule and over budget. Working with a major UK telecoms company, the brief was to deliver systems as part of a major network upgrade. Project discipline and communication had broken down, with processes not being followed nor documented. I provided training, consultancy and rewrote the programme strategy.• Saved 1000s of hours of FTE by collaborating directly with the senior project team and delivering a series of training programmes.• Implemented major culture change within the project, rebuilding processes and procedures to bring them into line with the Nokia approach.• Coordinated and guided 40 Project Managers working across 26 workstreams.• Rebuilt a dysfunctional sales-to-delivery handover process, implementing controls, enforcing existing policy. This saved Nokia over €100,000 in liquidated damages claims.• Identified and remedied ongoing losses totalling approximately €11M, caused by scope-creep and miscommunication between sales and delivery teams.

Process Development ManagerThis role tasked me with restructuring Nokia’s procurement processes, rebuilding the entire ecosystem to align it with strategic goals and ensure it was defined by business needs. The brief was, in short, to make the Nokia procurement function as ‘Amazon-like’ as possible — more efficient, cost-effective and with a greater value-add to the customer.• Cut digitalisation project delivery time by 20%, building processes around SAP/Ariba technology while ensuring that the tools didn’t define the process.• Wrote a new supplier off-boarding process, cutting unnecessary Supplier Master Records by over 90%• Pioneered a lean, robust, supplier anti-corruption screening process to adhere to legislation. Limited the process impact to less than 2 days in 99% of cases. • Saved over €5M in start-up costs by implementing a revolutionary procurement process based on crowdsourcing talent.• Shaved 6 weeks from new supplier on-boarding time by building a framework for policy and governance around ‘fast-track suppliers’ whilst maintaining full compliance.• Lead on Nokia Global Procurement's ISO9001 re-accreditation. All processes, process changes, controls, training and performance evidenced and documented, as per ISO9001 2015
